RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

The Governing Body of Downing College invites applications for election to a Research Fellowship starting on 1 October 2009 and continuing until 30 September 2012 when the Fellowship will terminate.

The Fellowship will be open to graduates working in the Physical Sciences, including Astronomy and Astrophysics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Geophysics, Materials Science and Metallurgy, Pure and Applied Mathematics, Physical Geography, and Physics. When initial applications have been reviewed the competition will involve assessment of selected candidates' submitted work. A very small number of candidates will then be invited for interview. Anyone interested in applying for the Fellowship should note that the standard needed to progress to the later stages of the competition is extremely high. Overseas candidates should also note that the College will not pay for air fares should they be shortlisted for interview.

The Fellowship is open to graduates of any university with no age limit, but is intended to support those at an early stage in their academic careers, and will normally be awarded to a candidate who has recently completed a Ph.D. Degree or is close to completion. Applications from post-doctoral candidates already in paid employment within the University are welcomed. The emolument of a pre-Ph.D. Fellow not holding such paid employment is £18,710 if resident in College and £21,049 if living out of College. The emolument of a post-Ph.D. Fellow not holding paid employment is £19,842 if resident in College and £22,333 if living out of College. Single accommodation in College can be provided. (These figures are reviewed annually and standard increments awarded during the coming academical year will be included before October 2009. They may also be adjusted in the light of any grant or stipend which the Fellow may receive from other sources.) A Research Fellow becomes a member of the Governing Body of the College and is expected to participate in the governance and communal life of the College.

Further information can be found on the Downing College website (http://www.dow.cam.ac.uk/) or by contacting research-fellowship@dow.cam.ac.uk by email. Application forms can be downloaded from the College website and should be returned no later than 1 December 2008. Candidates should also arrange for two academic references to be sent to research-fellowship@dow.cam.ac.uk by 1 December 2008.

It is hoped that the Governing Body of the College will make an election in March 2009. The appointment will be conditional upon the candidate providing satisfactory evidence of the right to work in England in the capacity offered, together with proof of entry clearance/leave to remain.

Downing College is an equal opportunities employer.
