Examination in Modern South Asian Studies for the degree of Master of Philosophy

On the recommendation of the Degree Committee for the Faculty of History, the General Board and the Board of Graduate Studies have approved Modern South Asian Studies as a subject for advanced study for the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course), with effect from 1 October 2009. Special regulations for the examination in the subject have been approved as follows:

Modern South Asian Studies

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Modern South Asian Studies for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:
(a)  a thesis of not less than 15,000 words and not more than 20,000 words in length, including notes and appendices, but excluding bibliography, on a topic approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of History;
(b)  an essay of not more than 5,000 words on a topic chosen from a list of topics prescribed by the Degree Committee which are related to the course of debates in South Asian Studies;
(c)  one further essay of not more than 5,000 words on a topic chosen by the candidate from a list of topics prescribed by the Degree Committee;
(d)  a written examination of three hours' duration on a South Asian language specified by the Degree Committee and an oral examination of one hour's duration in that language.

The Degree Committee shall give notice of the topics specified under (b) and (c) above not later than the end of Full Michaelmas Term each year.

2. The examination may include, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral examination on the thesis and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls, and on the essays submitted by the candidate.
