RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

The College Council is seeking to make elections to two Research Fellowships, each tenable for three years, to commence on 1 October 2009. One Fellowship is devoted to those scholars pursuing or intending to pursue research in the Arts and Social Sciences, the other to those working in the Sciences (including mathematics, engineering, and the medical sciences). These Fellowships are primarily intended to provide opportunities for scholars at the earliest stage of their academic careers to establish a successful research profile.

The pensionable stipend of a Research Fellow is £15,743 a year (at the May 2008 stipend level for point 23 on the University's single salary spine) or £18,165 (point 28) if the Fellow holds a Ph.D. Degree. The Fellow will be entitled to a room in College and to Fellows' dining and other rights. Single residential accommodation will be made available for a charge (currently £1,236), but for those choosing to live in private accommodation there is a non-pensionable allowance of £2,957 a year and a first dependent-child allowance of £804. Increments to the stipend of approximately £535 (equivalent to one point on the salary spine) are payable in each of the second and third years of tenure to Ph.D. Degree holders. The level of Research Fellowship emoluments is normally reviewed annually when the stipends of University and College officers are reviewed.

The holder of a Research Fellowship will be encouraged to teach for up to six hours a week, with priority being given to teaching for the College. Additional payment will be made for this teaching at standard University supervision rates. The permission of the College Council is required for other paid work and all emoluments received must be disclosed to the Council. Council may reduce the Research Fellowship stipend in the light of other income received.

All applications, including references, must be made using the online application form on the College website (http://www.sid.cam.ac.uk/). The closing date is Tuesday, 14 October 2008 for the receipt of the online application and two references. The latter must also be submitted using the online form. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that her/his referees submit the form prior to the deadline. A signed copy of the application will be required from those applicants who are shortlisted and, at that stage, those candidates will be asked to submit two pieces of written work to supplement their application. It is anticipated that interviews for shortlisted applicants will be held during the week beginning 24 November 2008.

Further particulars and application forms may be obtained from the College website and any enquiries should be directed to the Fellow Secretary to the Research Fellowship Competition, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, CB2 3HU (email research.fellowships@sid.cam.ac.uk).
