Natural Sciences Tripos, Part II (History and Philosophy of Science)

With effect from 1 October 2008

The regulations for the examination in History and Philosophy of Science for Part II of the Natural Sciences Tripos have been amended to introduce a second option.

Regulation 30.

History and Philosophy of Science

By amending the first sentence so as to read:

The examination shall comprise two alternative options, (A) and (B).

A candidate who chooses option (A) shall offer
(a) three written papers of three hours each, to be chosen by the candidate from a list of not more than ten papers;
(b) a dissertation of between 5,000 and 12,000 words, inclusive of notes;
(c) two essays, each of not more than 3,000 words in length.

A candidate who offers option (B) shall offer
(a) four written papers of three hours each, to be chosen by the candidate from a list of not more than ten papers;
(b) two essays, each of not more than 3,000 words in length.

Part II

History and Philosophy of Science

By inserting a preliminary paragraph, with effect from the same date, so as to read:

The examination will comprise two alternate options, (A) and (B). Option (A) is for students intending to graduate after taking Part II; option (B) is for those who plan to proceed to Part III.
