regulations for examinations

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board or other authority concerned, the regulations for certain University examinations have been amended as follows:

Archaeological and Anthropological Tripos, Parts IIA and IIB

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 249)

With effect from 1 October 2008

The regulations have been amended as follows: (i) the scheme of examination for Parts IIA and IIB in Archaeology has been amended; and (ii) the details for the dissertation offered for Part IIB of the Tripos have been amended to exclude figures and tables from the word limit.

Regulation 15.

ARCHAEOLOGY

Special areas

By amending the titles of Papers A8 and A9 and by removing the footnote attached to these two papers.

Paper A8: from 'Post-glacial adaptations and Mesolithic archaeology' to 'Later European prehistory'
Paper A9: from 'Neolithic and Chalcolithic in southern, central, and eastern Europe - societal interaction' to 'Special topics in European prehistory'.

The following papers have been discontinued:
Paper A10 (Neolithic and Copper Age in northern and western Europe - cognition and ideology),
Paper A11 (The Bronze Age and Iron Age of southern, central, and eastern Europe - understanding social change),
Paper A12 (The Bronze Age and Iron Age of northern and western Europe - understanding the landscapes of prehistoric Europe).

Regulation 20.

By amending sub-paragraph 20(c) so as to read:

(c) A dissertation shall be of not more than 10,000 words in length, excluding footnotes, figures, tables, appendices, and bibliography. Each dissertation shall be typewritten, unless a candidate has obtained previous permission from the Faculty Board to present it in manuscript.

ARCHAEOLOGY

The Faculty Board of Archaeology and Anthropology have amended the supplementary regulations, with effect from the same date, as follows:

Special areas

By removing from the list of paired papers Papers A7/A8, A9/A10, A11/A12.

Papers A5/A6 and A7/A8. Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeology

By removing the reference to Paper A8 from this heading and by replacing the final sentence under this heading so as to read:

One of Papers A5 and A6 is taught in alternate years. Paper A7 is also taught in alternate years.

Papers A9/A10 and A11/A12. Later European prehistory

By deleting this section and replacing it with the following two sections:

Paper A8. Later European prehistory

This course presents a broad general introduction to later European prehistory from the beginning of the Holocene through the earliest historical societies. Coverage includes the Mesolithic, the Neolithic, the Copper and Bronze Ages, and the Iron Age.

Paper A9. Special topics in European prehistory

This course presents advanced discussion of special topics in European prehistory. Each year's topics are drawn from a rotating list of regional, thematic, and/or theoretical subjects relevant to Later European Prehistory (Mesolithic through Iron Age). It is normally expected that students will have taken or be taking Paper A8 (Later European prehistory) currently.
