Nomination of members of the Council in class (e) (External Members): Election of members of Nominating Committee

28 April 2008

Revised regulations for nomination of members of the Council in class (e) (External Members) were approved by Grace 1 of 23 January 2008. The current members of the Council in this class, Mr Nigel Brown and Lord Simon of Highbury, come to the end of their tenure on 31 December 2008. The amendment to Statute A, IV, 2 to increase the number of persons in this class to four has been approved by the University and is currently in the process of being approved by Her Majesty in Council. The Council hopes soon to begin the process of searching for new members in this class and consequently it is important that the Nominating Committee constituted under the new regulations is put in place as soon as possible.

The Vice-Chancellor accordingly gives notice that an election is to be held of:

two persons in class (c) of the Nominating Committee from amongst those current members of the Council in classes (a), (b), and (c) of the Council;

four members in class (d) of the Nominating Committee from members of the Senate.

The first person elected in class (c) shall serve until 30 September 2011 and the second member elected shall serve until 30 September 2009. The first two members elected in class (d) shall serve until 30 September 2011 and the second two elected shall serve until 30 September 2009.

In order to be eligible a candidate for election must be nominated on a paper sent to the Vice-Chancellor at the Old Schools so as to reach her not later than noon on Friday, 23 May. The paper must contain (a) a statement signed by two members of the Regent House, nominating the candidate for election and (b) a statement signed by the candidate certifying that he or she consents to be so nominated. The candidate should also provide a curriculum vitae (see below).

The Vice-Chancellor would be obliged if nominations could be delivered to the Registrary in the Old Schools during office hours. Nominations will be published as they are received; the complete list of nominations will be published in the Reporter on Thursday, 29 May.

In accordance with the regulations governing the election (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 118), each person nominated for election is required to send to the Registrary, not later than noon on Friday, 23 May, a statement of his or her curriculum vitae for distribution to members of the Regent House with the voting papers. It is suggested that such a statement should be of not more than 500 words in length, and that it might cover the following points:

Previous posts held, whether in Cambridge or in other universities or outside the university system, with dates.

A note of the candidate's particular interests within the field of University business and experience that he or she might bring to the Council.

The election will be conducted by postal ballot, under the Single Transferable Vote regulations. Voting papers will be distributed, together with the statements provided by candidates, on or before Wednesday, 4 June. The last date for the return of voting papers will be Friday, 20 June.
