STIPENDIARY LECTURERSHIP IN ENGLISH LITERATURE

MICHAELMAS TERM (October - December) 2008

The College proposes to appoint a six-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in English Literature for Michaelmas Term 2008 to cover some of the teaching of Dr Ankhi Mukherjee, who will be on sabbatical leave. It is possible, depending on the success of a further Arts and Humanities Research Council leave application, that the appointment will be renewed into Hilary Term 2009 (January - March 2009), but it will not be extended beyond this second period.

The person appointed will be required to give six hours a week of tutorials during the eight weeks of full term (the College allows Stipendiary Lecturers to weight their hours, and thus required real contact hours may be slightly less). Further teaching, beyond the contractual hours, may be necessary, and will be paid at agreed Senior Tutors' Committee rates. The Lecturer will be expected to take responsibility for the first year period paper 1832-1900, and those options taken as Special Authors or Special Topics at Final Honour School which they are able to teach. Ability and experience in teaching nineteenth-century literature is essential; experience in twentieth-century literature and literary theory would be an advantage. The Lecturer will also be expected to carry out some of the normal duties of a College tutor, including setting and marking collections (internal termly examinations), and, in collaboration with the other tutors in English (Mr Bernard O'Donoghue and Dr Gillian Woods), assisting with admissions (admissions continue into 9th week Michaelmas Term, i.e. up to 12 December 2008), and sharing responsibility for the pastoral care of undergraduate students.

The stipend will be on a scale from £3,833 to £4,315 for the term (the Senior Tutors' Committee recommended scale), subject to revision in line with national adjustments to University teachers' salaries, and the position is superannuable under USS. Further particulars of the post, including details of lunch and dining rights, should be obtained from the Academic Administrator, Wadham College, Oxford, OX1 3PN (tel. 01865 (2)77946, or email joasia.semper@wadh.ox.ac.uk), to whom applications should be sent by Monday, 26 May, or from the College website (http://www.wadham.ox.ac.uk/). Applicants should arrange for two referees to write directly to the Academic Administrator by the same date.
