Notice of benefactions

The Vice-Chancellor gives notice that she has received with gratitude a generous benefaction of £1.25m from the East Asian History of Science Foundation to endow the Professorship of Chinese in honour of Dr Joseph Needham's work in Chinese History, Science, and Civilization. A further £750,000 in support of the Professorship has been identified from the sums donated by Trinity College in support of Professorships in the Schools of Arts and Humanities and the Humanities and Social Sciences (see the Vice-Chancellor's Notice of 17 July 2006, Reporter, 2005-06, p. 834).

The Council, on the recommendation of the General Board, is submitting a Grace to rename the Professorship as the Joseph Needham Professorship of Chinese History, Science, and Civilization (Grace 1, p. 656) and to approve regulations to govern the proposed endowment. Professor R. Sterckx, who took up the Professorship of Chinese on 1 October 2007 has been consulted and concurs with the change in title.

The Vice-Chancellor gives notice that she has received with gratitude a most generous benefaction of £5m from an anonymous donor to support the University. The Vice-Chancellor proposes that the benefaction should be used to establish a separate Endowment Fund the income of which will be applied to the fulfilment of the University's mission to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning, and research at the highest international levels of excellence.

The Council is submitting a Grace (Grace 4, p. 656) to approve regulations to govern the proposed Vice-Chancellor's Endowment Fund.
