Acting Director of the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities (CRASSH)

The Management Committee of CRASSH wishes to announce its intention to appoint an Acting Director for 2009-10 while the present Director is on leave. Clinical Lecturer (Specialist Registrar) in Clinical Genetics in the Department of Medical Genetics

Applications are invited for this post in the Cambridge University Department of Medical Genetics. The Department is looking for applicants from any medical background to join a dynamic and successful Department. The post offers trainees with academic potential the chance to start their research careers in an excellent research environment. Alternating one-year blocks will be spent in research and in clinical practice. The successful candidate will have an honorary NHS contract as a Specialist Registrar and be expected to gain a CCT in Clinical Genetics in post. Applicants should have MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification, and a Ph.D. or M.D. Degree. Experience relevant to their research and/or some experience of clinical genetics would be advantageous. The appointment will be for four years with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. Salary will be on the scale £29,580 to £51,219 a year (pay award pending).

University Lecturer in Electrical Engineering in the Department of Engineering

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates working in the field of Electrical Engineering. The research opportunities in the Electrical Division are substantial with facilities available in the newly constructed Electrical Engineering Building incorporating the Centre for Advanced Photonics and Electronics (CAPE) as well as in the Nano-IRC. Suitable candidates should have a proven record of scholarship and research in the broad research area of nano- and micro- materials and systems. Candidates will be expected to contribute directly to the research and teaching within the electronic devices and materials areas throughout the four-year Engineering Tripos.

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends (from 1 May 2008) for a University Lecturer is £34,793 to £44,074 a year.

University Lecturer in Natural Language and Information Processing in the Faculty of Computer Science and Technology

Applications are invited for one University Lectureship or Senior Lectureship in the Natural Language and Information Processing Research Group in the Computer Laboratory. The successful candidate will be expected to take up the appointment by 1 October 2008 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Candidates should have an outstanding record of research in an area that overlaps or complements the interests of current members of the Natural Language and Information Processing Group. Preference will be given to candidates whose research relates to broad coverage text processing.

Group boundaries are very flexible and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to other areas including broader themes such as 'Computing for the Future of the Planet'. The Laboratory provides an environment in which engagement between theoretical and practical aspects of Computer Science, and with industry, is encouraged.

The person appointed will be expected to contribute to the teaching of the M.Phil. course in Computer Speech, Text, and Internet Processing as well as to undergraduate courses such as Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing. An interest in the interplay between teaching, long-term research, and deployment of new technologies is especially welcome.

EAP Director (Senior Language Adviser) at the Language Centre

The Language Centre provides language learning opportunities for all students and staff of the University. This includes certified taught courses in several languages and resources in over 150 languages for independent learning in the John Trim Centre. The Language Centre supports the teaching of languages throughout the University and advises and assists Departments and Faculties in the development of language learning and teaching programmes. The Centre offers English for Academic Purposes pre-sessional and in-sessional courses for overseas postgraduate students which are run annually. The Centre has, through project work, also developed several award-winning interactive online language learning and teaching materials.

The purpose of this role is two-fold:

As EAP Director, the role holder is in charge of designing, developing, implementing, and monitoring the Centre's EAP pre-sessional (August-September) and in-sessional courses (October-June). He/she coordinates the EAP programmes and support as well as advising all those involved with international students at the University of Cambridge;

As Senior Language Adviser, the role holder is responsible for ensuring the smooth functioning of the John Trim Centre with the assistance of an advising team and to support the language-learning needs of the Centre's users. They offer advice and guidance to everyone who uses the facilities including undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff, researchers, and other individuals from Colleges, Faculties, and Departments. Annually, there are approximately 5,000 users. This includes appropriating different methods for the most effective ways of language learning and ensuring that the standards of the University of Cambridge are upheld.

Academic Programme Manager at the Institute of Continuing Education

Professional Studies at the Institute of Continuing Education (based at Greenwich House, Cambridge) is looking for an Academic Programme Manager to develop and maintain its portfolio of non-credit and credit-based courses. The post-holder will be responsible for developing and co-ordinating academic and financial elements of the programmes.

Candidates should have demonstrable skills in instructional design and knowledge and experience of adult and higher education. They should be computer literate and have excellent financial management and communication skills. Some travel will be required. The salary will be in the range of £30,012 to £40,335. The limit of tenure is three years.

School of the Biological Sciences: Assistant Finance Manager and Finance Adviser

Assistant Finance Manager

Applications are invited for the post of Assistant Finance Manager in the School of the Biological Sciences. The post-holder will work alongside the School Finance Manager to support financial management procedures across the School.

The main responsibilities include implementation and continued support/monitoring of School-wide financial policies and procedures. There will be opportunities to work with Departments to develop their financial capabilities and to contribute to the development of new procedures for Departments and the School.

Candidates should have excellent analytical and communication skills (the post-holder will be working with staff at many different levels) and will either hold, or be working towards, a recognized professional accounting qualification.

Finance Adviser

Applications are invited for the post of School Finance Adviser for the School of the Biological Sciences. The School Finance Adviser reports directly to the Finance Manager of the School, working with a group of Departments and Research Institutes with a total turnover in excess of £100m a year.

The post-holder will provide support to a specific portfolio of Departments, respond to demands and be pro-active in identifying potential problem areas, suggesting corrective action, where applicable. This will involve working closely with staff at all levels across the University.

Candidates should have excellent analytical and communication skills and be strong team players. Candidates will ideally be recently qualified or working towards a recognized professional accounting qualifications.
