Smuts Memorial Fund Commonwealth Lectures: Notice

The Board of Managers of the Smuts Memorial Fund announce that, in lieu of a series of lectures that were to have been held earlier this academical year, they are open to nominations for a lecture or a series of lectures to be held either later this year (2007-08) or during next year (2008-09). Lectures, which must be on a Commonwealth-related subject, are organized and advertised by the hosting Department, but the Smuts Memorial Fund makes a financial contribution. Relevant Departments will shortly be invited to bid for funds of up to £2,500 towards the direct costs of the lecture or lectures.

The ordinances of the Smuts Memorial Fund state that 'The third charge on the income of the Fund shall be the cost of a lecture or course of lectures to be delivered by a Smuts Memorial Lecturer appointed from time to time, on such conditions as they may think fit, by the Board of Managers of the Fund'. The Board of Managers have determined that the lectures will normally be held biennially, and will be contacting relevant Departments in due course about the next bid in sequence.

Departments may continue to submit requests to the Managers in the usual way for support for ad hoc lectures outside the two-yearly cycle.

For further information please contact Miss Kathleen White, Smuts Memorial Fund (e-mail kfw20@admin.cam.ac.uk).
