Departmental Secretary, Grade C, in the Language Centre

The Language Centre is seeking to appoint a Departmental Secretary. The post-holder carries the responsibility for maintaining the efficient and effective running of the Centre and for managing all financial, administrative, and personnel matters appertaining to the Centre and its staff, acting on behalf of and reporting to the Director.

The Language Centre provides language learning opportunities for all students and staff of the University. This includes certified taught courses in several languages and independent learning resources in over 150 languages. The Language Centre supports the teaching of languages throughout the University and advises and assists Departments and Faculties in the development of language learning and teaching programmes. The Centre has, through project work, also developed several award-winning interactive online language learning and teaching materials.

Candidates will need to be educated to degree level, to possess an equivalent business qualification, or have extensive experience in previous roles. Knowledge of University policies and procedures and the University's CUFS accounting system would be an advantage. In addition to this, excellent computer skills including familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases are essential. The successful candidate will be organized and ordered, and be able to understand accounting procedures and to implement them in a methodical and systematic fashion.

The role requires relevant experience in a managerial or administrative position. Excellent social skills, good communication skills, and the ability to handle people across all levels are mandatory. Equally, a flexible approach and the capacity to be sensitive in certain situations are of great importance.

This is an extremely interesting and challenging role for someone who would enjoy working with a multi-national team of staff and who has a strong interest in or knowledge of other languages. The salary will be in the range of £30,012 to £40,335 a year.

Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

Applications are sought for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on a project with Professor H. E. Huppert, FRS, within the Institute of Theoretical Geophysics (http://www.itg.cam.ac.uk/) funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The project will require the development of new descriptions of fluid exchange flows in a variety of different situations, from both a theoretical and experimental point of view. Applicants should have a Ph.D. Degree in an appropriate discipline with a strong foundation in theoretical modelling and laboratory experimentation. The position is available for three years in the first instance. The starting date will be as soon as possible after 1 September 2008. The salary will be on the standard University scale in the range £25,134 to £32,796 (£25,888 to £33,780 as of 1 May) depending on previous research experience.
