Office of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education): Notice

The Council wishes to make an appointment to the post of Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education from 1 October 2008, following the retirement from that office of Professor M. C. McKendrick on 30 September 2008.

The role of the Pro-Vice-Chancellors is to take forward strategy and policy development and to support the Vice-Chancellor in providing institutional leadership to the University, particularly in their area of responsibility. The Pro-Vice-Chancellors work closely with the Chairs of Schools and senior professional administrators. Pro-Vice-Chancellors are appointed from senior academic officers respected by the University.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) will be appointed by the Council, after consultation with the General Board, for a period of three years from 1 October 2008. The Council will be advised by a Nominating Committee chaired by the Vice-Chancellor and with the following members: Professor A. J. Badger, Dr L. C. Taub, Dr D. W. B. McDonald (members of the Council), and Professor P. J. Ford and Professor Sir Tom Blundell (members of the General Board).

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor will be appointed for up to 80% of full time on secondment for three years in the first instance. There is the possibility of reappointment to a maximum tenure of six years. The stipend payable is £103,865 (as at 1 August 2007) pro rata.

The Nominating Committee welcomes expressions of interest by and suggestions of suitable persons who hold a senior post in the University or a College with extensive experience in higher education and a demonstrable interest in educational matters within the University. Expressions of interest and suggestions should be communicated to the Vice-Chancellor, University Offices, The Old Schools, Cambridge, CB2 1TN by 18 April 2008, from whom a fuller description of the role may also be requested.
