Graces to be submitted to the Regent House at a Congregation to be held on 23 February 2008

The Council has sanctioned the submission of the following Graces to the Regent House at a Congregation to be held on Saturday, 23 February 2008.1

1. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Divinity honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon The Most Rev. and Rt. Hon. JOHN TUCKER MUGABI SENTAMU, M.A., Ph.D., Honorary Fellow of Selwyn College, Lord Archbishop of York and Primate of England.

2. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Law honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon Justice SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (Retired), Chancellor of the College of William and Mary.

3. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon DAVID GROSS, sometime Rothschild Visiting Professor at the Isaac Newton Institute, Frederick W. Gluck Professor of Theoretical Physics and Director of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of California, Santa Barbara, Nobel Laureate in Physics.

4. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon Sir RALPH HARRY ROBINS, D.L., F.R.Eng., F.R.Ae.S., engineer and industrialist, formerly Chairman of Rolls-Royce plc.

5. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon HERMAN WALDMANN, M.A., M.B., B.Chir., Ph.D., F.R.S., formerly Fellow of King's College, member of Sidney Sussex College, Professor of Pathology and Head of the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology in the University of Oxford.

6. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon HAROLD PINTER, C.H., C.B.E., C.Lit., F.R.S.L., actor, playwright and director, formerly Associate Director of the National Theatre, Nobel Laureate in Literature.

7. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Music honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon CHRISTOPHER JARVIS HALEY HOGWOOD, C.B.E., M.A., Honorary Fellow of Pembroke College and of Jesus College, Honorary Professor of Music, Founder and Director of the Academy of Ancient Music.

1 It is expected that these Honorary Degrees will be conferred at a Congregation to be held on Monday, 23 June (see the Vice-Chancellor's Notice on p. 478).
