St John's College invites applications from suitably qualified men and women for a five-year fixed-term Supernumerary Teaching Fellowship in Philosophy (without membership of Governing Body), with effect from 1 October 2008. The person appointed will be expected to teach undergraduates up to a maximum of ten hours each week during term, and to play a full part in the organization of philosophy teaching in St John's for undergraduates reading for the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics degree, Literae Humaniores, and various Joint Schools. The successful applicant will be expected to be able to teach introductory epistemology and metaphysics for the First Public Examination, elementary formal logic for the First Public Examination, and ancient philosophy (in Greek and Latin).
The successful candidate will also share in pastoral duties and the undergraduate admissions process. The election to the Fellowship will be for one year in the first instance, renewable subject to a satisfactory report on the specific duties. No duties are required for the University, and the approval of the College must be sought before any are undertaken. A year of paid sabbatical leave will be offered as the final year of the appointment to permit the Fellow to further his or her research.
The person appointed will have obtained his or her doctorate by 1 October 2008, and will be expected to engage in original research. The annual salary will be on the incremental scale of £25,889 to £30,913.
