Transkills Project Academic Leader

The Pedagogic Support Co-ordinators Group, Chaired by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, are seeking to secure the services of an Academic Leader, for two years on a full- or part-time secondment to lead the Transkills Project. This opportunity may be suitable for someone who holds a senior academic position.

The main focus of the Project will be to develop tools to assist students in strengthening generic study skills such as essay writing and mathematics. The project seeks to increase the readiness of students coming to Cambridge to participate fully in the University's programme from day one by establishing a sustainable set of tools and practices that can be used prior to arrival and during the first year of study. A significant proportion of HEFCE's TQEF has been allocated to the Project. The Project will run for two years, and, it is anticipated, will incorporate other initiatives already underway.

The Academic Leader will work closely with the Pedagogic Support Co-ordinators Group, and a wide range of Departments and Colleges, but a good deal of autonomy is anticipated. A strong background in university teaching, familiarity with the University, and a strong desire to support the University's widening participation strategy is essential.

The Academic Leader will be expected to: provide leadership to the Transkills project and bring it to a successful and sustainable conclusion; communicate widely across the University to engage a broad constituency of users and to establish mechanisms of continuous improvement; negotiate and implement the Transkills project plan, including financial management within the agreed budget; encourage wide use of the tools developed, put in place mechanisms to monitor their take-up and success, and take on board feedback.

The Academic Leader will also: gain an overview of pedagogic support activities across the University, including provision of learning resources from students with diverse needs; identify possibilities for greater co-ordination and collaboration in pedagogic support provision; and prepare the proposals for sustaining and development of pedagogic support beyond the funded two-year period.

The Project is designed to help the University to fulfil the key aims of its Learning and Teaching Strategy (http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/education/strategy/). For further information or an informal talk, please contact Alice Benton, Head of the Education Section (tel. 01223 330127, e-mail amlg1@admin.cam.ac.uk). The closing date for applications is 9 November 2007.
