Downing College

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

The Governing Body of Downing College invites applications for election to a Research Fellowship from 1 October 2008 until 30 September 2011, when the Fellowship will terminate.

The Fellowship will be open to graduates working in Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic, Archaeology, Architecture, Classics, Divinity, English, History of Art, Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics, Music, and Oriental Studies. After the initial applications are reviewed the competition involves assessment of selected candidates' submitted work. A very small number of candidates are then invited for interview. Anyone interested in applying for the Fellowship should note that the standard needed to progress to the later stages of the competition is extremely high. Overseas candidates should also note that the College cannot be responsible for the payment of air fares should they be short-listed for interview.

The Fellowship is open to graduates of any university with no age limit, but is intended to support those at an early stage in their academic careers, and will normally be awarded to a candidate who has recently completed a Ph.D. Degree or is close to completion. Applications from postdoctoral candidates already in paid employment within the University of Cambridge are welcomed. The emolument of a pre-Ph.D. Fellow not holding such paid employment is £18,165 if resident in College and £20,436 if living out of College. The emolument of a post-Ph.D. Fellow not holding paid employment is £19,264 if resident in College and £21,682 if living out of College. Single accommodation in College can be provided. These figures are reviewed annually and will be adjusted in the light of any grant or stipend which the Fellow may receive from other sources. A Research Fellow becomes a member of the Governing Body of the College and is expected to participate in the governance and social life of the College.

Application forms with further information are obtainable from the Senior Tutor, Downing College, Cambridge, CB2 1DQ (e-mail senior-tutor@dow.cam.ac.uk). Forms should be returned no later than 1 December 2007. The Governing Body hopes to make an election in March 2008.
