Assistant Director of Studies in General Practice in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care

The post of Assistant Director of Studies in General Practice will be available from April 2008. It is based within the General Practice Education Group in the General Practice and Primary Care Research Unit. It relates to the primary care education programme which the Unit organizes for University of Cambridge student doctors in the undergraduate entry course. This programme was completely revised with a new curriculum in 2005.

Duties will include contributing to the development and delivery of the Unit's student doctor education programme, evaluation of teaching, and supporting students and GP teachers. There will also be the opportunity to become involved in research projects conducted by the Unit.

The post-holder will work as a member of an enthusiastic team headed by a Senior Lecturer in the Unit and ably supported by an experienced administration team. S/he will be a fully qualified, practising General Medical Practitioner preferably providing a minimum of three clinical sessions a week. S/he will be experienced in the delivery of medical education, preferably involving student doctors, and able to devote three sessions a week to their work in this post.

The appointment will be subject to the Statutes and Ordinances of the University and will be for periods not exceeding three years at a time. The pensionable stipend is £71,822 to £96,831 a year, in respect of three sessions, according to the level of seniority, pro rata.

Computer Officer, Grade II (Photography and Illustration Service Manager), in the University Computing Service

The University Computing Service has a vacancy for the manager of its Photographic and Illustration Service (PandIS) team, which provides digital photographic and illustration facilities and expertise to the University in support of its teaching, research, and education needs. The successful applicant will combine photographic, IT, and entrepreneurial skills to ensure the success of a fast changing, mainly self-financing service.

Candidates must have: photographic qualifications (a degree in Photography or equivalent); substantial experience of mini-lab processing; a background of successful team management; a record of entrepreneurial achievement; extensive knowledge of IT especially image-processing software; good English skills, both verbal and written.

This is a permanent appointment, subject to a satisfactory nine-month probation period, on a salary scale of £30,012 to £40,335 a year, with initial salary depending on experience.

Computer Officer, Grade II (Head of Web Content), in the Office of External Affairs and Communications

The Office of External Affairs and Communications seeks an exceptional web communications professional to deliver a professional, dynamic, and user-driven website. The Head of Web Content will write, edit, and maintain copy for the top levels of the University site (cam.ac.uk) covering core areas such as research, alumni, and student information. The post-holder will provide direct co-ordination and editorial oversight for the web communications of all UAS offices (central administration) and ensure that consistency is employed across the site, both for design and copy. He/she will also advise and train on web communications across the University. The salary will be in the range of £30,012 to £40,335 a year.

The successful candidate will need to be a proactive team member, working closely with his/her colleagues in the Office of External Affairs and Communications, as well as the Management Information Services Division and the University Computing Service. He/she will need extensive experience of managing a large, content-rich website, with good working knowledge of cross-platform issues, XHTML, CSS, and associated editing software.

The post-holder will need high-level web writing skills and a strong understanding of user-centred design concepts for the web. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential as he/she will be required to provide leadership, advice, and guidance on web communication issues to senior staff, and to a large team of content providers and web editors.

Librarian, Grade B, in the Faculty of Philosophy

Applications are invited for the post of Librarian for the Casimir Lewy Library, in the Faculty of Philosophy. This is a key post in a leading teaching and research Faculty. The post-holder will be responsible for running the Library and for providing an effective and efficient library service for undergraduates, postgraduates, senior members, research students, and visiting scholars.

Applicants must be educated to degree level and hold a postgraduate professional library qualification. Experience in Librarianship is essential, preferably in an academic environment. Knowledge of international cataloguing standards is required, as well as experience of automated library systems and other IT applications. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate experience of managing staff as well as budgets. In addition, he/she will have excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Some knowledge of the subject areas covered by the Library would be an advantage. The salary will be in the range of £30,012 to £40,335 a year.

Temporary Lecturer in Philosophy of Religion in the Faculty of Divinity

Applications are invited for a Temporary Lectureship in Philosophy of Religion in the Faculty of Divinity to substitute for a post-holder who will be taking maternity leave. The post will commence on 1 January 2008 and is expected to last until 31 December 2008, or the return of the post-holder, whichever is the earlier. This is a full-time appointment and is subject to six months' probation. The salary will be in the range of £33,779 to £42,791 a year.

The successful candidate should have expertise in the field of Philosophy of Religion and should be able to deliver lectures of a high quality.

Candidates must be able to take up the post on 1 January 2008. The post would suit someone who has recently submitted a Ph.D. thesis in the field of Philosophy of Religion.

Temporary Lecturer in Early Modern European History, c. 1450-1760, in the Faculty of History

Applications are invited for a one-year temporary Lectureship in Early Modern European History, c. 1450-c. 1760. The post arises following the award of a prestigious Philip Leverhulme Prize to Dr William O'Reilly. The tenure of the Lectureship will be from 1 January until 31 December 2008. The funds for this post are available until 31 December 2008 or the return of the post-holder, whichever is the earlier.

The appointee will teach for Paper 16 (European History, c. 1450-1760) in Part I of the Historical Tripos, and may also be invited to contribute to teaching in Part II of the Tripos and in the Faculty's M.Phil. Degree in Early Modern History. He/she will be expected to play a full role in examining and to undertake small administrative tasks where necessary. The salary will be in the range of £33,779 to £42,791 a year.

COSMOS Supercomputer System Manager and Relativity Group computer support

The COSMOS Supercomputer is a national level high performance computing facility, dedicated to cosmological research, involving a collaboration of 28 investigators from ten UK universities. Professor Hawking is the principal investigator of the COSMOS consortium which has been in existence for ten years. At present the consortium operates a 152 core SGI Altix 4700, with 456Gb globally shared memory and over 20Tb storage, and applications are pending for a state-of-the-art 10 Tflop system. The Relativity and Gravitation Group is a large research group comprising at present six Professors, three Readers, one Lecturer, three teaching Fellows, six postdoctoral researchers, and 22 Ph.D. students. It has a group secretary, plus a computer officer/administrator (the role-holder) shared with COSMOS. The role-holder is responsible for group computer support.

The Group is seeking a System Administrator to manage the COSMOS supercomputer facility and inter-University consortium, including configuration and troubleshooting of the physical system, software maintenance and development, user administration, support, and training. The role-holder will also provide administration of COSMOS financial matters, including grant preparation, procurement, and budgeting. The salary will be in the range of £30,012 to £40,335 a year. The post is available for two years with the possibility of further extension, subject to funding.

The role-holder will provide system management of Group computer resources, including procurement, system configuration, maintenance and development, user support, and training. The role-holder will also maintain contact with computer support staff at a departmental and University level where this is required to further the Group's research objectives, and will occasionally provide support and training outside the Group context where the Department requires additional support or developmental effort.

Applicants should hold a good first degree, preferably in a science or computer science subject, and significant experience with networked, unix-based computers, in particular Linux, at system administration level, while supporting a large scientific user base. Applicants should also have experience of administering a large supercomputer facility. Familiarity with high performance computing resources, such as the configuration and maintenance of clusters, storage area networks, and numerical software, would also be useful. The post-holder will need to communicate clearly with individuals for training purposes and with representatives of external organizations.

The successful candidate will have the ability to balance a budget, the ability to write coherently for applications and scientific reports using TeX/LaTeX, and the ability to write HTML web pages for user documentation and public interest.
