The University proposes to appoint a University Lecturer in Assyriology in association with Wolfson College. The appointment will run from l January 2008 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applicants should hold, or expect to hold by the start of the appointment, a doctorate in the field of Assyriology, and be able to provide evidence of their ability to teach Assyriology at university level. The successful candidate will have a primary expertise in Assyriology, and will be required to give lectures, classes, and tutorials in Assyriology, including Akkadian and Sumerian language and texts, and courses on civilization and general culture of the Ancient Near East, to co-ordinate teaching at all levels, to carry out research, examine, supervise graduate students, and to play a part in the administrative work of the Faculty of Oriental Studies. The salary will be in the range of £38,019 to £51,095.

A fixed-term research and teaching appointment in Classical Arabic is available from 1 October 2007 for one year. This initiative is designed to provide an intensive and supported career development opportunity for an outstanding academic at an early stage in his/her career, and to promote equality of opportunity by helping to create a more diverse pool of potential candidates for future academic posts at Oxford or elsewhere.

The Fellowship is tenable in the Faculty of Oriental Studies, and is in Classical Arabic. The post will be offered in association with Pembroke College. They will also have an academic mentor as well as a personalized career and professional development package, including the opportunity to undertake the University's postgraduate diploma in learning and teaching. The salary will be in the range of £25,889 to £31,840 a year (University Grade 7).
