REGULATIONS FOR EXAMINATIONS: NOTICES BY THE GENERAL BOARD

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board or other authority concerned, the regulations for certain University examinations have been amended as follows:

Philosophy Tripos, Parts IB and II

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 378)

With effect from 1 October 2007

Part Ib

Candidates who take Part IB of the Philosophy Tripos in the year next after obtaining honours in an examination other than Part IA of the Philosophy Tripos and for whom six terms have not passed since their first term of residence, take one fewer paper than otherwise required. In order to ensure that candidates study an appropriately wide range of subjects in Philosophy, the Faculty Board of Philosophy have agreed that such candidates should not be allowed to take Paper 8 in Part IB of the Philosophy Tripos (the subject Experimental Psychology in Part IB of the Natural Sciences Tripos).

Candidates offering Paper 8 will continue to be exempt from taking the Essay Paper, Paper 9. The weighting of Paper 8, for those who offer it, continues to be double that of other papers.

The regulations have been amended accordingly.

Regulation 5(b).

By amending the regulation so as to read:

(b) Subject to the provisions of sub-paragraphs (c) and (d) of this regulation, a candidate for Part IB shall offer papers as follows:
(i) a candidate who has not previously obtained honours in an Honours Examination, or who takes the examination in the year next after obtaining honours in Part IA of the Philosophy Tripos, shall offer Papers 1, 2, and 9, and two papers from Papers 3-7; or Papers 1, 2, and 8, and one paper from Papers 3-7;
(ii) if six complete terms have not passed after his or her first term of residence, a candidate who takes the examination in the year next after obtaining honours in an examination other than Part IA of the Philosophy Tripos shall offer Papers 1, 2, and 9, and one paper from Papers 3-7;
(iii) if he or she has kept at least seven terms, a candidate who takes the examination in the year next after obtaining honours in an examination other than Part IA of the Philosophy Tripos shall offer Paper 9, and four papers from Papers 1-7; or Paper 8 and three papers from Papers 1-7.

The weighting of Paper 8 for those who offer it, shall be double that of other papers.

Part II

The Faculty Board of Philosophy give notice that Papers 2 (Philosophy of mind) and 6 (Philosophy of science) for Part II of the Philosophy Tripos are suspended for the academical year 2007-08.

The regulations for Part II of the Tripos have also been amended to include another paper, Paper B2, that may be borrowed from the Classical Tripos.
