Use of the University Library: Notice

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Library Syndicate, they have amended the regulations for the use of the University Library (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 618) to take account of new rules for borrowing from the Library that have been introduced by the Syndicate. Under the new rules:

(i) Readers will be permitted to make online renewals of books on loan to them.
(ii) A reader will be allowed a maximum of one renewal for any book, subject to earlier return if that book is wanted by another reader. After two loan periods, the reader will be required to return the book to the Library and it will then be held in the Library for at least 72 hours to allow other readers access to it. After that period the reader may borrow it again.
(iii) A recall notice for a book requested by another reader will be accompanied by notification that, unless the original due-date falls within the next seven days, a new due-date has been allocated for its return. This date will be set at seven days after the date of the recall notice and fines will start to accrue from that date if the book has not been returned.
(iv) The fines for recalled items that have not been returned by the due-date will be 50p for each weekday, that is twice the standard fine.
(v) To allow undergraduates to continue to work on their research projects during the Christmas and Easter vacations, a vacation loan period has been introduced. This will cover the period from the last day of Michaelmas Full Term to the first day of Lent Full Term or the period from the last day of Lent Full Term to the first day of the Easter Full Term.

The regulations have been amended, with effect from 24 September 2007 (the day the Library re-opens after the Annual Inspection), as follows:

Regulation 6.

By inserting a new sub-paragraph (c) so as to read:

(c) Notwithstanding the provisions of Regulation 6(b), any volume borrowed under Regulation 5(3) between the Monday and Friday of the last week of either Michaelmas or Lent Full Term may be retained until the first day of the following Full Term, unless the Librarian has demanded its earlier return.

Regulation 7.

By amending the final sentence of this regulation so as to read:

The borrower shall comply with this requirement within seven days of the date of such notification.

Regulation 8.

By inserting a second sentence into the regulation so as to read:

When loans are renewed online the amendments to the Library borrowing records shall be recorded via the Library catalogue.
