Examination in Archaeology for the degree of Master of Philosophy

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 462)

With effect from 1 October 2007

The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Archaeology for the degree of Master of Philosophy currently consists of three options. These options will in future be offered as separate M.Phil. courses. The regulations for the examination in Archaeology have therefore been rescinded to be replaced by the following regulations:

Archaeological Heritage and Museums

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Archaeological Heritage and Museums for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:
(i) a thesis of not more than 15,000 words in length, including footnotes, but excluding appendices and bibliography, on a topic approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology;

and
(ii) two written papers, each of three hours' duration, as follows:
  Paper 3. The socio-politics of the past.
  Paper 4. Museums: history, theory, and practice.

and
(iii) three essays, each of not more than 4,000 words in length, of which two shall be essays on topics relating to the management of the archaeological heritage, and one shall be on a topic approved by the Degree Committee and relating to Museum practice.

A candidate shall undertake practical work during a period of experience in the University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, usually, though not necessarily, in the form of an exhibition. The length of the period of the practical work shall be determined by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology. A record of this practical work, bearing the signature of the Museum Curator under whose supervision it was performed, shall be presented by the candidate for the inspection of the Examiners.

2. The examination may include, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral examination on the thesis and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls.

Archaeological Research

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Archaeological Research for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:
(i) a thesis, of not more than 15,000 words in length, including footnotes, but excluding appendices and bibliography, on a topic approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology;

and
(ii) three essays or projects, each of not more than 4,000 words in length, on subjects relating to archaeological research design chosen by the candidate in consultation with his/her supervisor;

and
(iii) the presentation of a research seminar on the topic of the candidate's thesis research;

and
(iv) one workbook of assessment of materials on research methods on topics announced by the Degree Committee.

2. The examination may include, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral examination on the thesis and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls.

World Archaeology

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in World Archaeology for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:
(i) a thesis, of not more than 15,000 words in length, including footnotes, but excluding appendices and bibliography, on a topic approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology;
and
(ii) two written papers, each of three hours' duration, as follows:
  Paper 1. The principles and practice of archaeology.
  Paper 2. Aspects of world archaeology.

Paper 2 will include the following sections, from which every candidate, subject to the approval of the Degree Committee, must select one, on which he or she will be required to answer three questions:

(a) Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeology
(b) Bio-archaeology
(c) Mesopotamian archaeology
(d) South Asian archaeology
(e) African archaeology
(f) Later European prehistory
(g) The archaeology of early historic Europe
(h) The archaeology of ancient Egypt
(i) Quantitative analysis
(j) Ethnoarchaeology
(k) East Asian archaeology
(l) Archaeology of the Americas
(m) Geo-archaeology;

provided that the Degree Committee may announce, not later than the end of the Easter Term of the preceding academical year, that a particular section or sections will not be available.

and
(iii)three essays, each of not more than 4,000 words in length, of which one shall be an essay on topics related to the principles of archaeology, one on the practice of archaeology, and one on the topic of the candidate's choice of option in Paper 2.

2. The examination may include, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral examination on the thesis and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls.
