University Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer from 1 August 2007 will be £33,779 to £42,791 a year.

University Lectureship in the Manufacturing and Management Division of the Department of Engineering

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a University Lectureship in Human Resource Management. The successful candidate will take up the appointment as soon as possible.

The field is broadly defined but the successful candidate is likely to have interests in innovation and manufacturing and will be expected to provide teaching and co-ordination across the undergraduate and graduate programmes in the Department of Engineering in partnership with Judge Business School. Teaching responsibilities will include contributing to undergraduate courses, supervising final-year projects, and supervising graduate students. Enthusiasm for a broad and integrating approach to Human Resource Management in the context of practice will be an advantage.

The successful candidate will have, or be expected to develop, a record of world-class research commensurate with the Department's international reputation. Collaboration with the Division's established Research Centres in Strategy and Performance, Technology Management, International Manufacturing, and Economics and Policy will be strongly encouraged.

University Lectureship in the Department of Physics

Applications are invited for a University Lectureship in the Department of Physics, in the area of experimental physics of polymers and colloids, and rheology.

This appointment will be seen as part of a larger strategy to link activities in soft condensed matter physics in the Department to other thrusts in the University, including the BP Institute and Physics of Medicine. A senior candidate with a developed research programme is sought.

Assistant Director (Financial Operations) (Ref: AG01980)

Applications are invited for the post of Assistant Director (Financial Operations) in the Finance Division of the University Offices.

Reporting directly to the Director of Finance, the key responsibilities of this role include: managing a team of 35 staff; management of the reporting section which has responsibility for preparation of the monthly management accounts and the University's statutory accounts; management of the central accounting and treasury section; management of the transaction processing group, covering accounts payable, receivable, and cash management; oversight of the Oracle-based financial system; a lead role in developing and recommending the University's accounting policies; providing guidance on financial matters to academic departments and central committees.

The successful candidate will be a qualified accountant with previous experience of working within a complex organization and will have a sophisticated management style coupled with experience of managing a team of a significant size. In addition to this, an interest in treasury would be an advantage, as would a strong technical accounting background.

Assistant Director (Financial Planning and Analysis) (Ref: AG01981)

Applications are invited for the post of Assistant Director (Financial Planning and Analysis) in the Finance Division of the University Offices.

Reporting directly to the Director of Finance, the key responsibilities of this role include: managing a team of 22 staff including twelve qualified accountants, covering financial planning, budgeting, costing, and analysis; the development and provision of financial information and advice, interpretation, and analysis of management information to Committees, Schools, and academic departments across the University in support of long-, medium-, and short-term financial decisions; operating at both a strategic and operational level advising on the financial management of the University, advising on and delivering change, and identifying potential financial risks; taking a lead in co-ordinating and liaising with other staff across the University to understand the implications of decisions made and to support the development of a consistent and co-ordinated approach.

The successful candidate will be a qualified accountant with experience at a senior management level in a complex environment. He/she will have substantial financial planning and analysis experience, with in-depth understanding of the aims and mechanics of planning and budgeting, financial modelling, and a good understanding of business processes and financial IT systems.

The salary for both posts will be in the range of £49,607 to £57,508 a year. Senior Assistant Registrary (Head of Graduate Administration) in the Academic Division

The Board of Graduate Studies is responsible for the admission of the University's graduate students, supervision of their work, and the award of postgraduate degrees. As Head of Graduate Administration and Secretary of the Board, the post-holder will be responsible for driving policy and administrative changes in many aspects of the University's graduate education arrangements and of the graduate student experience at Cambridge.

Applicants should be educated to degree level and have significant relevant administrative and staff management experience, preferably gained in higher education. Appointment will be to the retiring age subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period. The salary will be in the range of £45,397 to £48,161 a year.

Senior Advisory Officer (Senior Architect/Space Analyst) in the Estate Management and Building Service (EMBS) of the University Offices

The Estate Management and Building Service seeks to appoint a Senior Advisory Officer (Architect/Space Analyst) to work in its busy Projects Section as part of the Minor Works team. The successful candidate will be one of four professional staff who have responsibility to formulate briefs and establish cost parameters for all new University major building projects. This includes preparation of pre-feasibility space studies for the Space Management Advisory Group to ensure the capital building programme complies with the University's Estate Strategy. Similarly the successful candidate will also be expected to provide innovative and alternative costed option appraisals to Departments requiring new builds or alterations. There will be a requirement to assist in the development and implementation of policies and practices for effective use of space within the University.

Candidates should be fully qualified architects with a background in the analysis, planning, and effective use of space, along with excellent design and CAD capabilities. A good knowledge of current building contracts and both T & C Planning and Building Control legislation is important. Candidates should be able to demonstrate good interpersonal skills and team working with the ability for self motivation as well as the ability to motivate others.

Appointment will be to the retiring age subject to satisfactory completion of a probationary period. The pensionable scale of stipends for the post is £33,779 to £42,791 a year with the possibility of progression on contribution once in post to £48,161.

DSpace Developer in the University Computing Service

The University of Cambridge's institutional data and document repository system uses DSpace, a complex Java application running on Tomcat/PostgreSQL. The Computing Service is looking for an experienced software analyst/developer to maintain and develop this system and its client tools to ensure that it continues to provide for the needs of the University and deliver appropriately enhanced functionality for the future.

Candidates must have considerable experience of object-oriented software development, preferably with Java Web and SQL database applications in a Unix/Linux environment, and must be self-motivated and capable of prioritizing their own work. They must have experience in managing complex software development projects, preferably in an open source context, and must have excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. The successful candidate will also be expected to be capable of presenting his/her work to a wider national and international audience and must be a good communicator and collaborator.

This is a fixed-term appointment for five years, subject to a satisfactory nine-month probation period. The salary will be in the range of £30,012 to £40,335, with the possibility of progression on contribution once in post to £44,074. Initial salary will depend on experience.

Investment Analyst in the Finance Division of the University Offices

Applications are invited for the post of Investment Analyst within the Investment Office of the Finance Division.

Reporting directly to an Investment Director, and initially to the Chief Investment Officer, the main focus of the post is on the analysis of asset classes, due diligence on external investment managers, and the subsequent monitoring of these managers once they have received an allocation from the University's investment portfolios. The post-holder will need to form relationships with a wide range of investment professionals, and will influence the decisions taken in connection with the CU Endowment Fund and other University assets managed by the Investment Office, as well as investment performance and the perceptions of benefactors.

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level (or equivalent) and have a relevant Master's degree or experience working in the investment sector. An investment or other professional qualification would be advantageous. He/she will have advanced mathematical skills and analytical ability and an enquiring mind. He/she will have good written and other communications and presentation skills and have the ability to form and maintain a multitude of professional relationships. The salary will be in the range of £30,012 to £40,335 a year.
