Director of the Graduate School of Biological, Medical, and Veterinary Sciences

Applications are invited for the new post of Director of the Graduate School of Biological, Medical, and Veterinary Sciences. The Director will be the academic head of the Graduate School which is responsible for the training of research students and postdoctoral workers in the School of Biological Sciences and the Clinical School.

The Director will be supported by a small administrative team, including a dedicated Graduate School Administrator (to be appointed).

The Director needs to be aware of the University's overall mission in respect of graduate and postdoctoral education and research and will be expected to support the University's aims at the highest level through the activities of the Graduate School.

The post may only be held concurrently with a University office with 50% of the officer's time devoted to the duties of Director. The post-holder will be expected to seek unpaid leave of absence from his or her substantive office.

The appointment is for four years to 31 July 2011, subject to a probationary period of nine months. Reappointment is subject to a review of funding. The stipend is currently £57,507 a year, pro rata, rising to £59,232 on 1 August 2007. The person appointed will be eligible for membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme. There is an annual holiday entitlement of 30 days, pro rata, plus public holidays.

Course Director in the Institute of Continuing Education

Applications are invited for the part-time (30% FTE) post of Course Director for the M.St. Degree in Social Enterprise and Community Development, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The part-time post of Course Director has been established to lead the development, administration, and quality assurance of the degree course supported by an Academic Programme Manager (part-time) and a Secretary (part-time). The post offers the opportunity for a suitably qualified and experienced candidate to develop further work in this area at the Institute.

The Master of Studies in Social Enterprise and Community Development is a part-time degree course aimed at chief executives and senior officers in community-based regeneration organizations in deprived and socially excluded areas. The course will have an intake of about 20 students a year, who will study at Cambridge for a total of 39 days over the two years of the course.

Applicants should have a good degree in a related discipline and some experience of teaching at postgraduate level. They should have good communication and good administrative and IT skills. The post would suit postdoctoral researchers or research students currently in the last year of their studies who wish to pursue an academic career.

The post is part-time and the post-holder will be expected to work from home. The Course Director will be encouraged to undertake developments leading to a higher percentage FTE post. Appointment will be made for not less than two years at a time, and renewable by mutual agreement. The (pro rata) salary will be in the range of £11,076 to £12,340 (steps 11 to 15 of the general scale of stipends).
