STIPENDIARY LECTURESHIP IN HISTORY 2007-08

Wadham College invites applications for a Stipendiary Lectureship in History for the academical year 2007-08 to cover some of the teaching of Dr Jane Garnett, who will be on sabbatical leave. The Lecturer will be required to give six hours a week of tutorials during the eight weeks of full term, averaged over the year (the College allows Stipendiary Lecturers to 'weight' their hours if teaching in groups of two or three, and thus real contact hours may be slightly less). The stipend will be on point one of the Senior Tutors' Committee recommended scale, presently £11,116 a year.

The Lecturer will be expected to take responsibility for teaching the period papers History of the British Isles VI and VII for both first-year and final exams, and any Optional, Further, or Special Subjects which s/he is able to teach, and for supervising appropriate undergraduate theses. S/he will also be expected to participate in the teaching of the first-year Approaches to History paper and the Final Honour School Disciplines of History paper. An ability to teach some 19th and/or 20th century General History papers might be an advantage. Full details of the current syllabuses are available through the University's website. The post might be particularly appropriate for a graduate student coming towards the end of, or just having finished, doctoral study.

Further details may be obtained from the College website at http://www.wadham.ox.ac.uk/, or from the College's Tutorial Office (e-mail jessica.begon@wadh.ox.ac.uk). The closing date for applications is 15 June 2007.

HODY FELLOWSHIP BY SPECIAL ELECTION IN CLASSICS (GREEK AND LATIN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURE)

Wadham College invites applications for a Fixed-Term Fellowship by Special Election in the field of Classics. The Fellowship is intended to provide teaching in Classics and an opportunity for continuing research to an outstanding academic at the beginning of her/his career. The post allows for a combination of research and teaching; in the first year not more than six hours of tutorial teaching a week will be expected; in the second year the Fellow will take over the responsibilities of the Tutor in Classics, during the sabbatical leave of the Tutorial Fellow, Dr Stephen Heyworth.

The successful candidate will be elected to a Fellowship from 1 October 2007, for two years. The stipend will be on the first point of the University's Recommended Scale for Fixed-Term Fellows, presently £23,692 a year, and will be taxable.

The Fellow will be expected to engage in postdoctoral research for the period of the post. Candidates must have a strong academic record; at the time of their appointment be approaching the end of their doctoral research or have begun postdoctoral study; have research expertise as demonstrated by publications; and have a coherent plan of research for the duration of the Fellowship.

In the first year, the Fellow will be required to give at least four but not more than six hours a week of tutorials during the eight weeks of full term, averaged over the year; the topics will be chosen according to the needs of students and the expertise of the Fellow; but it is likely that this will involve some language teaching, and help with preparation for the Mods paper 'Texts and contexts'. In the second year, the Fellow will be required to give at least eight but no more than twelve hours a week of tutorials during the eight weeks of full term, averaged over the year; and should be able to teach (besides Greek and Latin language) at least two of the following papers: Iliad, Aeneid, Greek Literature of the 5th Century BC, Latin Literature of the 1st Century BC, as well as other options. Full details of the current syllabuses are available through the University's website.

Further details may be obtained from the College website at http://www.wadham.ox.ac.uk/, or from the College's Tutorial Office (e-mail jessica.begon@wadh.ox.ac.uk). The closing date for applications is 24 June 2007.
