Notice of benefaction

23 May 2007

The Vice-Chancellor gives notice that she has received with gratitude a benefaction of £75,000 from Thomas Broadbent and Sons Limited. This sum will be used to provide a Scholarship for postgraduate studies in Mechanics and Materials and related areas in the Faculty of Engineering together with other moneys, including up to £100,000 from the Board of Cambridge in America, representing a gift for the same purpose by Dr David and Mrs Susan Hibbitt, and discretionary funds held in the Department of Engineering made available for this purpose by Professor N. A. Fleck and Professor M. F. Ashby. The Faculty Board of Engineering have proposed that the Scholarship be named in honour of Professor M. F. Ashby, CBE, FRS, FREng, formerly Professor of Engineering and Royal Society Research Professor, who has dedicated his career to research into the intersection between mechanics, materials, and design.

The Council is submitting a Grace to the Regent House (Grace 1, p. 717) for the approval of regulations to govern the proposed Scholarship.
