Sidney Sussex College

SENIOR BURSAR

Applications are invited for this post, to be taken up no later than 1 January 2008. The Senior Bursar is the senior financial and administrative officer of the College, and ex officio a Fellow and a member of the Council.

One of the smaller Cambridge Colleges, Sidney Sussex (founded 1596) has 330 undergraduates, 190 graduate students, 75 Fellows, and 100 staff. The College enjoys a friendly atmosphere, strong academic performance, and excellent relationships between Fellows, staff, and students. The Senior Bursar is a key figure in many aspects of College life, and often represents the College in the wider University and beyond.

The Senior Bursar has responsibility for all the non-academic staff and activities of the College. S(he) is central to the strategic and operational management of the College's finances and assets. Responsibilities include development and maintenance of the College's buildings and estates; execution of all financial, business, and property operations; and fund-raising, including engagement with major donors. The Senior Bursar will play a central part in the College's participation in the University's 800th anniversary campaign, which runs until 2012, as well as the College's 1596 Foundation.

The successful candidate will have proven financial, administrative, and leadership skills, and sympathy with the College's mission to foster excellence in education and research.

ADMISSIONS DIRECTOR

The College seeks applications for the post of Admissions Director, to take up the post from 1 September 2007, or as soon as possible thereafter.

In recent years, Sidney has been one of the leading Colleges in developing initiatives to generate and sustain effective programmes of outreach, widening participation, and undergraduate selection. The successful candidate will build on these successes to ensure that the College maintains its reputation for academic excellence, and social and cultural diversity.

The Admissions Director is responsible to the Governing Body for overseeing the process of assessment and selection of undergraduate applicants to the College. S(he) will develop sustained relationships with schools, enable colleagues to participate fully in encouraging applications via Open Days, informal visits to Sidney, and a varied programme of school visits, and will maintain and develop widening participation initiatives to encourage applications to the College from well-qualified students from all backgrounds. The Admissions Director will be supported in these tasks by a dedicated Admissions Officer, other Fellows with designated admissions responsibilities, and by the Tutorial Department in which the post is based

The Admissions Director will teach for the College and will be expected to supervise between four and eight hours a week during the teaching year on one of the Cambridge undergraduate degree courses: there is no restriction as to the subject area. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue a scholarly interest. The Admissions Director will be elected to a Fellowship.

COLLEGE LECTURESHIP AND FELLOWSHIP IN PURE MATHEMATICS

The College Council is seeking to appoint a committed teacher and active researcher to a College Lectureship and Fellowship in Pure Mathematics with effect from 1 October 2007, or as soon as possible thereafter. The Fellowship has been instituted to ensure the continuity of research and teaching in Pure Mathematics within the College. The person appointed will be expected to teach for twelve hours a week during term and to assume shared responsibility for the Direction of Studies in Mathematics.

The post is a fixed-term appointment for a period of five years, with the possibility of renewal. Renewal of the post will be in accordance with the College's Code of Practice (which is available on request). The initial stipend will be on a scale ranging from point 39 to point 45 on the University's single salary spine (£25,134 to £30,012, correct as at 1 August 2007). Salary progression within this range is discretionary. The position is pensionable under the Universities' Superannuation Scheme.

The successful candidate will be a member of the Governing Body of the College. (S)he will have a teaching room in College and will enjoy the usual amenities of a Fellowship. Residential accommodation may be available in College.
