CLARKSON-PECKARD ESSAY

In 1785 the University Vice-Chancellor and Master of Magdalene College, the Reverend Dr Peter Peckard (1718-97), set a university essay prize on the question: 'Is it right to make slaves of others against their will?'. The prize was awarded to Thomas Clarkson (1760-1846) of St John's College, who went on to play a key role in the movement to abolish the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. A Clarkson-Peckard Essay prize worth £500 will be offered by St John's and Magdalene Colleges as part of the activities to commemorate the Bicentenary of the Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, 1807, and the University's role in securing its passage. The competition is open to all undergraduate members of the University. Essays may address any aspect of the history of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, its legacies, or slavery today, and should be typewritten and between 4,000 and 6,000 words in length.

Essays, identified only by a pseudonym, must be submitted to Mrs D. Fear, the Dean's Secretary, St John's College, on or before 5 October 2007, together with a separate covering sheet bearing the pseudonym and the name and College of the author.
