STIPENDIARY LECTURESHIP IN CLASSICS

Balliol College invites applications for a twelve-hour Stipendiary Lectureship in Classics for the academical year 2007-08.

The Lecturer will be asked to teach up to twelve hours of tutorials a week. The College hopes to appoint a Hellenist who would be able to teach the 5th century Greek Literature and Greek Tragedy options in Greats, and also undertake Greek literature and language teaching for Classics Mods (Homer and Texts and Contexts: see University Regulations at http://www.classics.ox.ac.uk/ for details). The Lecturer will be expected to assist with the administration of Classics in Balliol, including admissions, and with the pastoral care of students.

The stipend payable to a twelve-hour Lecturer will be on a scale which is currently £21,467 to £22,111 a year, depending on qualifications and experience. The Lecturer will have Senior Common Room rights, including an entitlement to free meals in term and most of the vacation, and the use of a teaching room in College. The College may choose to appoint two six-hour Lecturers in Classics in lieu of a twelve-hour Lecturer: candidates who wish to be considered for a six-hour post should specify this in their application.

Applications containing a curriculum vitae, a statement of research and teaching experience, and the names of two referees should be sent to the Senior Tutor, Balliol College, Oxford, OX1 3BJ by 9 May 2007. Candidates should ask their referees to write directly to the Senior Tutor by that date; it would be helpful if at least one referee could comment on the candidate's teaching experience and abilities. It is expected that interviews will be held on 21 May. Prospective applicants can contact Dr Rosalind Thomas (e-mail rosalind.thomas@balliol.ox.ac.uk), Dr Bob Cowan (e-mail bob.cowan@balliol.ox.ac.uk), or the Senior Tutor (e-mail senior.tutor@balliol.ox.ac.uk) for more details. LEONARD STEIN LECTURESHIP

Balliol College invites applications for the Leonard Stein Lectureship, 2007-08, to be held in the fields of International Relations, Politics, or Modern History, with special reference to the study of those subjects in relation to the modern Middle East. The post-holder is responsible for giving a number of named lectures in this subject area (normally two), and should also be willing to provide a small amount of tutorial teaching if asked to do so by the College. It is expected that the post-holder would be able to reside in Oxford during the period of the lectures; the College will provide accommodation, if required. The College is able to be reasonably flexible about the term in which the lectures would take place.

Accommodation and most meals during the period would be provided by the College. In addition, there will be an honorarium of £500 for each lecture.

Further particulars are available from the Senior Tutor, Balliol College, Oxford, OX1 3BJ. The closing date for applications is 25 May 2007. The choice of the College will not necessarily be limited to those who apply. Further information is available at http://www.balliol.ox.ac.uk/zadvertisements/stein/index.asp.
