University Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £32,795 to £41,544 a year and, from 1 August 2007, will be £33,779 to £42,791 a year.

University Lectureship in the study of modern and/or contemporary China in the Faculty of Oriental Studies

Applications are invited for a University Lectureship in the study of modern and/or contemporary China in the Faculty of Oriental Studies. Preference will be given to candidates specializing in human geography, social anthropology, modern Chinese history, international relations, cultural studies, or art history. The successful candidate will be expected to take up appointment on 1 October 2007. Applicants should have an excellent publication record and experience in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The ability to read and speak Chinese is essential as is native or near-native fluency in English.

University Physiologist in the Department of Physiology, Development, and Neuroscience

Applications are invited for the new post of University Physiologist, which is available from 1 July 2007 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. Degree in a subject relevant to physiology, and experience of delivering high quality undergraduate teaching across a broad range of systems physiology. As well as carrying a significant lecturing and demonstrating load, the University Physiologist will take principal responsibility for the organization of experimental teaching in physiology, including the development of new methods and materials, and will be involved in developments intended to increase the degree of integration of preclinical medical teaching. The salary will be £48,162 a year.

Director of the Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment (IDBE) course

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the Directorship of the IDBE course which is a fixed-term appointment at a level equivalent to a University Senior Lecturer. The successful candidate will take up appointment no later than 1 September 2007.

The IDBE is a joint initiative of the Departments of Architecture and Engineering. The Director is responsible for the planning and delivery of all aspects of the course which leads to a Master's Degree.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in both teaching and research commensurate with the Departments' international reputation and top-rank research rating.

Appointment will be for two years in the first instance (and may be extended given satisfactory recruitment to the course), and is for 80% of full-time. The current pensionable scale of stipends is in the range of £44,074 to £46,758 a year (pro rata).

Temporary Lecturer in African History in the Faculty of History

The Faculty of History seeks to appoint a Temporary Lecturer in the History of Africa for the period of one year. The person appointed will replace Dr Derek R. Peterson during the tenure of his Philip Leverhulme Prize. The post will extend from 1 October 2007 until 30 September 2008. Applications are welcomed from scholars working in all areas of African history. The new appointee will be expected to teach the history of Africa (including northern Africa) at all levels. The appointee's prime responsibility will be to contribute lectures and supervisions on a third-year undergraduate course on 'Africa since 1800', with Dr Ruth Watson. According to his/her special interests, the appointee will also contribute to the collaborative lecture courses mounted for the Part I papers 'The expansion of Europe from the fifteenth century to the First World War' and 'The West and the Third World from the First World War to the present day'. He/she will also be involved in the training and supervision of graduate students, and will be expected to contribute to the Faculty's research culture, to share its administrative and examining duties, and to participate in its research seminars. The salary will be in the range of £32,795 to £41,544 a year.

Mellon Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in Modern African and/or Demographic History in the Faculty of History

Applications are invited for a fixed-term (two years from 1 October 2007) Mellon Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in Modern African Economic and/or Demographic History. In addition to undertaking research, the Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to engage in innovative teaching within their field and develop collaborative links with other disciplines, such as Economics, Development Studies, and Geography. The salary will be in the range of £24,402 to £31,840 a year.

Research Associate in Philosophy in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science

Matching awards from the Leverhulme and the Isaac Newton Trusts have enabled the Department of History and Philosophy of Science to seek to appoint a Research Associate to work on a three-year philosophical project on biological accounts of human nature and their applications to ethical and political theory. The candidate must be able to take up the post by October 2007. The salary will be in the range of £24,402 to £31,840 a year.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. Degree, and a first-rate research record in a relevant area of philosophy. The research area lies at the intersection of philosophy of biology, ethics, and political philosophy, so candidates specializing in any one of these areas would be considered, providing they can demonstrate an interest in the other areas. The candidate's research record should be such as to strengthen the Department's submission in the upcoming Research Assessment Exercise. The candidate will collaborate closely on research with Dr Tim Lewens, and will produce both single- and joint-authored articles under his guidance. The successful applicant will also provide teaching and administrative cover for Dr Lewens while he is on leave in the academical year 2007-08. For the remaining two years of the project the candidate will focus on research, and teaching and administrative duties will be light.

Applications are invited for a Teaching Associateship in the Faculty of Economics, tenable for two years from 1 September 2007.
