RAMON JENKINS SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (BIOLOGICAL, MEDICAL, AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES)

The College invites applications for the Ramon Jenkins Senior Research Fellowship. The primary purpose of the Fellowship is to encourage research in the Biological, Medical, or Physical Sciences. The College would also expect the successful candidate to provide small-group teaching up to an agreed amount within one of the relevant undergraduate courses.

Applicants should be experienced in research at the postdoctoral level, and will be expected to conduct their research mainly in the University of Cambridge or an associated Institute. Access to an appropriate research environment would need to be already agreed or easily negotiable if this Research Fellowship is likely to be successful. The candidate would be expected to conduct the necessary negotiations. The appointment is not tenable alongside any other main employment, such as a University teaching appointment or clinical practice. The Fellowship is appropriate for applicants who are at a comparatively early stage of their academic career, typically 3-5 years postdoctoral.

The Fellowship is tenable for four years. It is hoped that the Fellow will take up the appointment on 1 October 2007, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The stipend and allowances of the Ramon Jenkins Senior Research Fellow will fall within the range of point 39 to point 45 on the University's single salary spine (£25,134 to £30,012, as of 1 August 2007). Salary progression within this range is discretionary. The initial stipend will be determined by the College Council after taking into account the qualifications, seniority, and other circumstances of the applicant. The stipend of the Fellowship is pensionable under the Universities' Superannuation Scheme. In addition, the College Council may make payments to, or for the benefit of, the Ramon Jenkins Senior Research Fellow towards the expenses of research, including expenses of travel and publication.

As a Fellow of the College in Class C, the Ramon Jenkins Senior Research Fellow will be a member of the Governing Body and eligible for membership of the elected College Council, and will be offered a room or rooms in College and the other usual amenities of a Fellowship. The Fellow may not undertake work other than research without the permission of the College Council. However, as indicated earlier, a moderate amount of teaching would be welcomed, and College teaching would be remunerated separately.

Further information about the College and this Fellowship may be obtained from the College website at http://www.sid.cam.ac.uk/. Anyone wishing to have an informal conversation about the Fellowship is welcome to contact the Senior Tutor, Dr Keith Straughan (tel. 01223 338847, e-mail senior.tutor@sid.cam.ac.uk).

Applications should comprise SIX copies (collated) of each of the following: a completed application form, obtainable from the Master's PA or downloadable from the College website; a curriculum vitae giving full name, address, and nationality, together with details of education, academic qualifications, and career, other awards and distinctions; details of present appointment, and date when the applicant would be free to take up the Fellowship; a brief account of the applicant's original work to date listing any publications (copies of which may be requested by the College); a statement of the work the applicant would wish to undertake and his or her reasons for wishing to conduct it in, or from, Cambridge; a statement of the proposed research environment, facilities, and collaborators, including details of any provisional arrangements already made; names and addresses of THREE persons, who may be approached for testimonials.

Applications should reach the Master, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, CB2 3HU, not later than 25 May 2007. The College reserves the right not to make an election.
