University Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £32,795 to £41,544 a year and, from 1 August 2007, will be £33,779 to £42,791 a year.

University Lectureship in Biological or Medical Physics in the Department of Physics

The University has made a major investment in medical and biological physics with the building of a new research centre in the Department of Physics, the appointment of a Herchel Smith Professor of the Physics of Medicine, and the recent appointments of two Lecturers in experimental bio-medical physics. Applications are now invited for a University Lectureship in Biological or Medical Physics, to be based in the new Physics of Medicine centre.

There is a preference for an experimentalist who will develop a programme that will span the interface between physical sciences and biology and/or clinical medicine, and will complement current research activities.

Clinical Lecturer/Specialist Registrar in Haematology in the School of Clinical Medicine

Applications are invited for an Academic Clinical Lecturer in Haematology as part of the Eastern region Haematology Specialist Registrar Training Programme. This academic NTN post was secured as part of the UKCRC/MMC Integrated Academic Training Programme and is a protected academic training post in a first-class haematology training rotation situated in a world-class research environment. The Trainee will be based at the academic and clinical departments on the campus of Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge.

The Lectureship will allow trainees of outstanding academic potential who have completed work for a Ph.D. Degree to complete specialist haematology training and to further develop academic skills at postdoctoral level.

The person appointed will be of the standing required for an honorary contract of service with the NHS Executive Eastern Region as a Specialist Registrar/ST6-7 in Haematology and will be required to undertake clinical work training (nominally 50%), research (nominally 50%), and teaching, which will include acting as a Clinical Supervisor to a group of students. The appointment will be for four years with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The salary will be in the range of £28,930 to £50,219 (under review).

Senior Assistant Registrary (Head of Communications Services)

Applications are invited for the newly created post of Head of Communications Services in the Office of External Affairs and Communications. The post-holder will lead a team delivering a wide-ranging service of new media communications, film and broadcast, brand management and corporate identity, web content, and publications, as well as a host of other specialist services that will help the Office to achieve consistent, professional, and high quality communications across the board. The salary will be in the range of £44,074 to £46,758 a year, with the possibility of progression on contribution once in post to £51,094.

The post-holder will be required to encourage and facilitate creative, innovative, and visionary communications for the University. The successful candidate will have significant experience and current knowledge of new media and emergent communication technologies, on-line communications, film and video, brand/corporate identity management, and publications and editorial services.

The successful candidate will also have finely honed interpersonal skills which will help her/him to promote these services across the institution and manage a wide range of suppliers to deliver the services. He/she will have solid managerial experience which will help her/him to lead a small but busy team and to ensure that the complex administration of the service is carefully managed.

Departmental Secretary, Grade C (Senior Administrator), in the Department of Engineering

Applications are invited for this senior post within the Manufacturing and Management Division (E) of the Department of Engineering. The successful candidate will report to and work closely with the Head of the Division, with responsibilities for the day-to-day operation of the Division and oversight and development of the administrative framework and processes. The post is a focal point for the Division's many industrial, government, and international links and the post-holder will be closely involved with the evolution and delivery of divisional policy within the broader context of the University and as part of the broader strategy for Engineering.

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent and have previous relevant experience ideally in industry as well as higher education. The ability to work at the highest levels of government and industry while supporting the strong and friendly community of students, academics, and industrialists in the Division is essential. Appointment will be to the retiring age subject to the satisfactory completion of a nine-month probationary period. The current pensionable salary range is £24,402 to £31,840 a year.

RCUK Fellowship/Lectureship in Computational Biology in the Department of Physics

Two Postdoctoral Research Associates in the Department of Social Anthropology

The Department of Social Anthropology is seeking to appoint two Postdoctoral Research Associates, each for three years, starting on 1 September 2007. These positions offer the opportunity to become an active member of the PLACEB-O Research Orbital (http://www.socanth.cam.ac.uk/research/placebo.html) at Cambridge and to play an enthusiastic part in maintaining and expanding its current activities. Both post-holders will work with and be directly responsible to Dr Monica Konrad. Applicants must have submitted for a Ph.D. in social anthropology, or relevant social science discipline, by uptake of the post.

Post 1 (Ref ISBC-C1)

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out ethnographic fieldwork in Thailand for a project investigating inter-institutional collaboration in international clinical trials and NGO health activism. The research entails wide-ranging interviews in medical and extra-medical settings and applications will be particularly welcome from those with expertise or interest in: pharmaceutical anthropology, political economy of techno-scientific knowledge, or critical science studies and science policy. Previous regional experience in South-East Asia and/or ethnographic research in clinical settings would be desirable.

Post 2 (Ref ISBC-C2)

The successful candidate will undertake ethnographic fieldwork on South-South bioethics advocacy, networking, and consultancy in universities, NGOs, and international organizations across India, Thailand, and Vietnam. The research entails the design and implementation of interviews with bioethics organizers, regional co-ordinators, trainers and activists, university faculty and medical professionals, civil servants, and staff attached to relevant Councils. The post-holder will play a key role in organizing a Regional Collaborative Workshop and will be active in datasets preparation. Applications are particularly welcome from those with expertise or interest in developing world bioethics, institutional ethics review, political ethics of global health policy, or science and technology studies. Previous regional experience would be desirable.
