With effect from 1 October 2007

The regulations have been amended (i) to introduce a revised new Paper Soc. 3 and (ii) to allow for a viva voce on assessed work.

Regulation 14.

By amending the titles of Papers Soc. 3-7 so as to read:

Sociology

Soc. 3     Concepts and arguments in sociology.

Soc. 4.     A subject in sociology I.

Soc. 5.     A subject in sociology II.

Soc. 6.     A subject in sociology III.

Soc. 7.     A subject in sociology IV.

And by replacing in the final sentence of this regulation the reference to Soc. 3-6 by reference to Soc. 4-7.

Regulation 15(a).

(i) By inserting in line 1 after 'Psy. 2,' 'Soc. 3,'; (ii) by replacing in line 2 the reference to Soc. 3-6 by reference to Soc. 4-7; and (iii) by replacing in line 4 the words 'Pol. 5 shall consist of' by the words 'Pol. 5 and Soc. 3 shall each consist of'.

Regulation 15(c).

By replacing in line 3 the reference to Soc. 3-6 by reference to Soc. 3-7 and by adding a final sentence to the paragraph so as to read:

Candidates may be called for viva voce examination in connection with their essays, statistical assignment, or research project.

Regulation 16.

By amending option (c) so as to read:

(c) Soc. 1, either Soc. 2 or Pol. 3 or Pol. 4, and either Soc. 3 or Int. 1B.

Regulation 17.

By inserting in sub-paragraph (c)(i) and (ii) after 'Int. 3-10' 'Psy. 1'; and by replacing in line 1 of the last sentence the reference to Soc. 4, 5, 9 by reference to Soc. 4, 5, 7, 9.

Regulation 19.

By replacing in sub-paragraphs (a) and (b) each reference to Soc. 3-10 by reference to Soc. 4-10 and by replacing in line 1 of the last sentence reference to Soc. 3-6 by reference to Soc. 4-7.

Regulation 20.

By replacing in sub-paragraph (a) the reference to Soc. 3-10 by reference to Soc. 4-10; by replacing in sub-paragraph (b)(i) and (ii) the reference to Soc. 1-10 by reference to Soc. 1, 2, 4-10; and by replacing in line 1 of the last sentence reference to Soc. 3-6 by reference to Soc. 4-7.

Regulation 21.

By replacing in the penultimate line the reference to Soc. 3-6 by reference to Soc. 4-7.

The supplementary regulations have been amended as follows:

Part I

Paper 2. Modern societies

By amending the text so as to read:

An introduction, through the work of Marx, Weber, and Durkheim, to key concepts and theories in sociology. An examination of core institutions and characteristics of modern societies including power and the modern state; the rise of nationalism; citizenship and social welfare; culture and the media; class and inequality; gender and the family; globalization and social change.

Parts IIa and IIb

Paper Pol. 3. The analysis of modern politics II

By amending the first sentence so as to read:

The paper examines a range of issues in understanding empirical politics.

and by deleting the second sentence.

Paper Pol. 4. The analysis of modern politics III

By deleting the second sentence.

Papers Soc. 3-7.

By renumbering Papers Soc. 3-6 as Soc. 4-7; by deleting the current Paper Soc. 7 (Modern Japan, 1); and by inserting a new Paper Soc. 3 so as to read:

Paper Soc. 3. Concepts and arguments in sociology

Conceptual and explanatory issues that arise in the study of modern societies. The paper is examined by two 5,000-word essays.

Papers Soc. 9-10.

By inserting the following papers:

Paper Soc. 9. A subject in sociology V

A subject in sociology specified by the Faculty Board from time to time.

Paper Soc. 10. A subject in sociology VI
