STIPENDIARY LECTURESHIP IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

Applications are invited for a fixed-term stipendiary Lectureship to teach the Old and Middle English parts of the English syllabus, with a preference for applicants with an interest in the earlier medieval period.

The Lecturer must be able to teach Schools papers 1, 3a, and 3b (English Literature 1100-1509), as well as Medieval and Old English papers in Moderations (paper 3 and where applicable 4). It would be an advantage to be able to contribute to papers in relevant special options (Schools paper 8). The successful candidate would also be expected to organize the studies of any student taking Course II, which focuses on Old and Middle English literature and language. Details of these courses are given in the relevant Faculty Handbooks for English, which may be downloaded from the Faculty website at http://www.english.ox.ac.uk/ (accessed by clicking the 'vacancies' link, and thereafter 'FHS handbook' or 'Mods handbook' as appropriate). The Lecturer will be required to teach eight hours a week averaged over three terms. S/he will also be required to take a full part in the administration of the subject, including admissions and collections (College examinations). Each term comprises eight weeks, and the College operates a 'weighted' hours scheme whereby teaching one undergraduate counts as one hour, two as 1.25 hours, and three as 1.5 hours.

The post is for a fixed period of two years from 1 October 2007, with the possibility of a one-year extension. It is intended to offer academics at an early part of an academic career valuable experience of the Oxford tutorial system. Academic mentoring will be offered. The salary will be on the stipendiary Lecturers' scale, currently £22,774 to £24,161 for a twelve-hour stint (pro rata). The Lecturer will have a share of a teaching room in College and will be entitled to the common table (lunch and dinner free of charge in College throughout the year when the kitchens are open, except Wednesday lunchtimes in full term), and to a number of other benefits.

Further details of University College and the courses offered are available from the College's website at http://www.univ.ox.ac.uk/, from where it is also possible to download an application form. Alternatively, the form is available from Mrs Jane Hornsby, the Academic Administrator (tel. 01865 286565, e-mail jane.hornsby@univ.ox.ac.uk/). Completed applications, including a curriculum vitae, and details of publications or papers accepted for publication, should be sent to the Academic Administrator by 1 March 2007. Applicants should arrange for two academic referees to send references to the Academic Administrator by the same date. No written work should be sent at this stage. Interviews are expected to take place on 18 April 2007 (subject to confirmation). Candidates are welcome to contact the Senior Tutor, Dr Anne Knowland (e-mail anne.knowland@univ.ox.ac.uk) for an information discussion.
