COMMEMORATION OF THE BICENTENARY OF THE ABOLITION OF THE SLAVE TRADE ACT 1807

The College is holding a number of events over the weekend of 16-18 February to mark the bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act of 1807, which was passed as a result of a campaign in which two of its members played a prominent part - Thomas Clarkson and William Wilberforce.

On 16 February, Professor Ruth J. Simmons, President of Brown College, USA, will give a public lecture entitled Hidden in plain sight: slavery and justice in Rhode Island, at 5.30 p.m. in the Palmerston Room, Fisher Building.

A conference entitled Campaigning - then and now will take place on 17 February, from 11.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. in the Fisher Building. This conference will be open to all, but is especially aimed at junior members. It will focus on the legacy of the abolitionists for modern campaigning and seek to arouse interest in issues of contemporary slavery. Speakers will include Boyd Hilton of Trinity College, Mike Kaye of Anti-Slavery International, Rose Hudson-Wilkin of the National Committee for Minority Ethnic Anglican Concerns, Kofi Mawuli Klu of Rendezvous of Victory, and Carrie Pemberton of Churches Alert to Sex Trafficking Across Europe.

No charge will be made to attend the conference (for which lunch will be provided). To book, please e-mail thenandnow@joh.cam.ac.uk, or telephone Tim Scott on 01223 338782, by 13 February.

There will be a Gospel Mass service at 10.30 a.m. on 18 February in the College Chapel to mark the bicentenary of the passing of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act 1807. The College Choir under David Hill will be joined by the London Adventist Chorale, a Gospel Choir led by the composer and conductor Ken Burton. The service is open to all and will include two new musical commissions. Further details can be found at http://www.joh.cam.ac.uk/chapel_and_choir/bicentenary_2007/.
