University Lectureship in the Faculty of Classics

The Faculty of Classics is seeking to appoint to a University Lectureship in Latin from 1 October 2007. This post is open to those, at any stage in their career, with a primary research interest in any area of Classical Latin literature. The successful applicant will benefit from the world-class facilities offered by the University and the generous support of research and teaching provided by the Faculty. The Faculty currently teaches approximately 250 undergraduates reading Classics (all of whom study both Greek and Latin language to degree level) and almost 100 graduate students (reading for Master's and doctoral degrees). It is one of the leading international centres in Classics, with some 40 teachers in Faculty and College posts. The successful candidate will be expected to take a full share of teaching across the range of Classical Latin literature and language, at all levels from beginners to doctoral students.

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £32,471 to £41,133 a year and, from 1 August 2007, will be £33,779 to £42,791 a year.

Administrative Officer (Purchasing Officer) in the Finance Division of the University Offices

The Finance Division of the University Offices seeks an enthusiastic and experienced professional to join a small team providing procurement support services to the University, which has a non-pay annual spend of approximately £220m.

The post-holder will provide a professional procurement service, offering advice to members of University staff at all levels. Working across the full range of spend, the post-holder will use his or her initiative to identify priority categories and design, sell, and implement solutions which reduce cost and contribute to the University's objectives. Drawing on experience in tendering, whole life costing evaluation, and contract management, the post-holder will arrange and market framework agreements and assist non-procurement staff to obtain value for money. Fully CIPS qualified or equivalent, the successful candidate will ideally have an area of expertise aligned to one of the University's major commodity expenditure areas. The pensionable scale of stipends for this post is currently £22,774 to £26,402 a year, with the possibility of progression on contribution once in post to £31,525.

Head of Purchasing (maternity cover) in the Finance Division of the University Offices

The Finance Division of the University Offices seeks an enthusiastic and experienced professional to join a small team providing procurement support services to the University, which has a non-pay annual spend of approximately £220m.

The successful applicant will have substantial experience in procurement, ideally including public sector experience and working in a devolved budget environment. The post-holder will be fully CIPS qualified or equivalent and will have excellent interpersonal, influencing, and communication ability, as well as proven management skills. Research Assistant/Associate in the Faculty of History

Applications are invited for the full-time post of Research Assistant/Associate to work on a four-year major research project on Death in Africa: a History c.1800 to the Present Day. This is an AHRC-funded interdisciplinary project headed by Professor Megan Vaughan of the Faculty of History and Dr Rebekah Lee of Goldsmiths College. It places the current HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa within a longer history of mortality and responses to mortality in the East, Central, and Southern African Region. The primary task of the Research Assistant/Associate will be to review the existing sources for the history of mortality in East, Central, and Southern Africa since c.1800, and to explore new methods and new sources for estimating changes in mortality. Other duties may be assigned as the project develops and the appointee will be required to work closely with other members of the project on collective activities, such as the organization of conferences and the production of joint publications.

Applicants will be expected to have a Ph.D. Degree (or to be nearing completion of a Ph.D. Degree) in historical demography and to have a knowledge of African history. Good computer skills are essential. The post will be tenable from 1 October 2007 until 30 September 2009. The salary will be in the range of £20,842 to £23,457 (Research Assistant, grade 5) or £24,161 to £31,525 (Research Associate, grade 7).
