Ideally, candidates will also be able to contribute to the teaching of the first-year Introduction to Literary Studies paper.

THE GREENDALE SCHOLARSHIP

Merton College is offering one Greendale Scholarship in 2007. The Scholarship is intended to assist a Swiss national or resident of outstanding academic excellence to study at the University of Oxford. It covers College and University fees, and a maintenance grant equivalent to that of the University's Clarendon Fund Scholarship (£9,250 in 2006-07), net of accommodation charges where applicable. Subject to satisfactory progress and the requirements of the particular programme of study, the Scholarship will be tenable for up to four years.

The competition is open to applicants who meet all of the following conditions: have completed their first degree at a Swiss university between 1 May 2004 and 1 October 2007; are Swiss nationals or residents i.e. hold a category 'B' or a category 'C' residence permit issued by the government of Switzerland; have undertaken not more than two years of postgraduate study or research; are intending to start a course of study leading to a degree or formal qualification from the University of Oxford starting in October 2007 in any of the subjects normally acceptable for graduate study at the College, apart from Medicine and the M.B.A.; and have no other funding which would allow them to do so.

The closing date for this competition is 20 April 2007. Applicants should already have been offered places by the relevant Faculty or Department of the University or should be in the competition for the third cycle of Oxford graduate admissions. Applicants who have not been accepted by the relevant Faculty or Department of the University by 18 May 2007 will be rejected. Further particulars, including details of the application process, can be downloaded from http://www.merton.ox.ac.uk/Vacancies/index.htm, or, in case of difficulty, may be requested from the Admissions Officer, Merton College, Oxford, OX1 4JD (tel. 01865 276 299, fax 01865 286500, e-mail julie.gerhardi@admin.merton.ox.ac.uk).

LEVENTIS GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP IN GREEK STUDIES

The College proposes to elect in 2007 a Leventis Graduate Scholar. The Scholarship will cover College and University fees, and an additional maintenance grant equivalent to the University's recommended sum for maintenance (£9,250 in 2006-07). Single accommodation, if required, is guaranteed for the first year of the Scholarship and may be available in subsequent years. The Scholar must meet the costs of this accommodation personally. Subject to satisfactory progress, the Scholarship will be tenable for up to four years.

The award is open to both men and women who meet the following criteria: all candidates must be university graduates, who are citizens of the Republic of Greece or the Republic of Cyprus, and have not undertaken more than two years of postgraduate study or research, and propose to begin a doctorate at the University of Oxford in October 2007 in the study of any aspect of Greek culture and civilization from the Bronze Age to AD1453. While the Committee will interpret this in a wide sense (especially geographically) candidates who are in any doubt whether their proposal meets the criteria should contact the Admissions Officer, Merton College. This award is not available for studies relating to Modern Greece, or at any other university.

Details of the award, including the application form, may be obtained from the College website at http://www.merton.ox.ac.uk/Vacancies/index.htm, or from the Admissions Officer, Merton College, Oxford, OX1 4JD (fax 01865 286500, e-mail julie.gerhardi@admin.merton.ox.ac.uk).
