RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

The College Council is seeking to make elections to two Research Fellowships, each tenable for three years, to commence on 1 October 2007. One Fellowship is devoted to those scholars pursuing or intending to pursue research in the Arts and Social Sciences. The other is devoted to scholars working in the Sciences (to include mathematics, engineering, and the medical sciences). These Fellowships are primarily intended to provide opportunities for scholars at the earliest stage of their academic careers to establish a successful research profile.

The current pensionable stipend of a Research Fellow is £13,524 a year (point 19 on the University's single salary spine), or £15,571 (point 24) if the Fellow holds the degree of Ph.D. The Fellow will be entitled to a room in College and to Fellows' dining and other rights. Single residential accommodation will be made available without charge, but for those choosing to live in private accommodation there is a non-pensionable allowance of £2,843 a year and a first dependent-child allowance of £775. Increments to the stipend of approximately £460 (equivalent to one point on the salary spine) are payable in each of the second and third years of tenure to Ph.D. holders. The level of Research Fellowship emoluments is normally reviewed annually when the stipends of University and College officers are reviewed.

The holder of a Research Fellowship will be encouraged to teach for up to six hours a week, with priority being given to teaching for the College. Additional payment will be made for this teaching at standard University supervision rates. The permission of the College Council is required for other paid work and all emoluments received must be disclosed to the Council. Council may reduce the Research Fellowship stipend in the light of other income received.

All applications must be made using the on-line booking form on the College website and must be accompanied by a signed paper application. The closing date is 31 January 2007 for the receipt of the on-line application and 7 February for the receipt of the paper application. Further particulars and application forms may be obtained from the Secretary to the Research Fellowship Competition, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, CB2 3HU (e-mail research.fellowships@sid.cam.ac.uk), and can also be downloaded from the College website at http://www.sid.cam.ac.uk/indepth/jobs/jobs.html.
