Graces submitted to the Regent House on 10 January 2007

The Council submit the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, other than any which is withdrawn or for which a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 107), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 19 January 2007.

1. That Regulation 11 of the general regulations for admission as a Graduate Student be amended by inserting a new sub-paragraph (c) and attached footnote as set out below and by relettering subsequent sub-paragraphs accordingly.1

(c) A person employed in a University institution* at least 40% full-time who has been accepted for admission as a Graduate Student, and who is registered as a candidate for the Ph.D., M.Litt, or M.Sc. Degree, or for an M.Phil. Degree examined by thesis and oral only, or for a Certificate of Postgraduate Studies, shall pay a University Composition Fee of one-third the Home and EU postgraduate Fee (Band D) for any term in which that person continues in employment by the University.

* That is, an institution that is under the supervision of the Council or the General Board. A candidate must hold a contract of employment with the University to be eligible for payment of a reduced fee. He or she will become liable to pay the full Composition Fee at the appropriate rate for the remainder of the course of research if he or she ceases to be employed by the University before qualifying for the degree for which he or she was registered as a candidate. The Staff Fee is not currently available to employees of the Colleges, the University Press, or Cambridge Assessment.

2. That the recommendations in paragraph 5 of the Report of the General Board, dated 8 November 2006, on the establishment of a Department of German and Dutch (Reporter, 2006-07, p. 147) be approved.2

3. That the recommendations in paragraph 20 of the Report of the Council, dated 20 November 2006, on Statute G, II, 4(iv) (Reporter, 2006-07, p. 180) be approved.3

4. That a German Endowment Fund be established in the University, to be governed by the following regulations:4

German Endowment Fund

1. The income of the German Endowment Fund shall be used to support German studies in the University.

2. The Managers of the Fund shall be the Head of the Department of German and three other persons appointed by the Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages in the Michaelmas Term to serve for four years from 1 January following their appointment.

3. The first charge on the income of the Fund in each year shall be to contribute towards the stipend of the Schröder Professor of German.

4. In any year any unexpended income shall be applied for the support of German studies in the University in a manner to be determined by the Managers. It shall be open to the Managers to add the unexpended income to the capital of the Fund.

5. That Professor Anthony Charles Minson, of Wolfson College, be appointed a member of the Finance Committee of the Council to serve for three years from 1 January 2007.

6. That Ms Deborah Lowther, of Girton College, be appointed a member of the Finance Committee of the Council to serve until 31 December 2008 in place of Professor H. A. Chase.
