University Lecturers and Senior Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £32,471 to £41,133 a year and, from 1 August 2007, will be £33,779 to £42,791 a year. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Senior Lecturer is currently £43,638 to £46,295.

University Senior Lecturer (Social Scientist) in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care

An outstanding applied social scientist is needed in the School of Clinical Medicine's multidisciplinary 5* General Practice and Primary Care Research Unit. Appointment will be to the retiring age subject to satisfactory completion of a probationary period.

The post-holder will pursue research interests in, and complementary to, the Unit's established programmes of work on the prevention of chronic diseases and their consequences in primary care. S/he will lead the Unit's contribution to the social science teaching strand for medical students in partnership with pre-clinical sciences and will supervise Master's and Ph.D. students.

University Lectureship in the Department of Experimental Psychology

The Department of Experimental Psychology seeks to appoint a University Lecturer, to take up appointment as soon as possible after May 2007. The appointment will be made in the general area of Human Cognitive Psychology or Cognitive Neuroscience with an emphasis on the topics of learning, memory, decision making, and reasoning.

University Lectureship in German Studies since 1700

The Department of German intends to appoint a University Lecturer in German Studies since 1700, with expertise in one or more of the following: intellectual history; cultural theory and analysis; visual culture. The successful candidate must be able to take up the appointment by 1 October 2007. The principal duties of the post involve the teaching of existing, and development of new, courses in modern German Studies at undergraduate and graduate level, and a contribution to departmental language teaching in German. The successful candidate will be expected to have a Ph.D. Degree, to show outstanding achievement and potential in research and publication in the field, and to have a native or excellent non-native command of German and English.

Two University Lectureships in Reproductive Biology

Applications are invited from candidates for two UFC funded non-clinical Lectureships in Reproductive Biology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The primary responsibility of the posts is to lead a programme of research in an area of Reproductive Biology. Candidates with an interest in any area relating to Women's Health are potentially appointable (including gynaecological cancer and fetal physiology): the primary requirement is outstanding potential as an independent scientist. However, the Department has current programmes which utilize gene array and transgenic mice and focus on placental biology and angiogenesis. Candidates with expertise in these areas would be particularly welcome. The people appointed should have a Ph.D. Degree, at least five years of post-doctoral research experience, and a proven track record of publications and successful grant applications.

University Lectureship in the Department of Physiology, Development, and Neuroscience

Applications are invited for a University Lectureship in Physiology, Development, and Neuroscience. The post is currently vacant and must be filled no later than 1 October 2007. The successful applicant will be expected to teach and undertake research in one or more of the following areas at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level: neuroscience, microscopy, histology, cell biology. He/she will have a strong track record of research on the functional anatomy of the peripheral and central auditory pathway in a manner that will complement the physiological, behavioural, and psychophysical strengths in auditory neuroscience that exist in the Department. High level skills in a range of microscopical techniques such as electron microscopy, quantitative immunocytochemistry, confocal microscopy, and neuroanatomy of the cochlea and auditory brainstem are essential. An understanding of neurotransmitter systems and the role of calcium signalling in the auditory pathway is also desirable.

University Lectureship in Social Science

The Institute of Continuing Education seeks to appoint a University Lecturer in Social Science. Applicants should have a good honours degree in a social science discipline (sociology or a related area); a postgraduate degree in social science; experience of and commitment to adult and continuing education; an established research and publications record in their disciplinary area; the ability to organize and develop research activity in the sociology of education, or in a related area, focused on post-compulsory education; the ability to lead a team of part-time tutors; and the ability to develop a successful social science programme for adult learners in the region.

Deputy Head (to the Head of Financial Transaction Processing and Control) in the Finance Division

The University is developing its shared services and has an ambitious programme of improvement to its financial processes and is now seeking to appoint an enthusiastic deputy. The Transaction Processing and Control team within the Finance Division is responsible for the University's Accounts Payable, Shared Services, Accounts Receivable, and Cash Management functions. This includes production and dispatch of over 10,000 payments, 40,000 invoices, and £30m in transactions per month, reconciliation of multi-currency bank and control accounts. The team also offers a range of shared services, including a traded peripatetic accounting service to the University's academic departments.

The post-holder will provide high quality technical advice to departmental staff, be responsible for the shared service and payments teams, and will deputize for the Section Head. This position also provides an excellent opportunity to develop a career in a large dynamic university. The salary will be in the range of £24,161 to £31,525 a year.

Applicants will need to have significant financial experience, ideally within Transaction Processing (AP, AR, and banking), and will have experience of staff management and of financial systems. The successful applicant will be educated to A level or equivalent, have good technical knowledge of financial systems and processes, and the ability to devise solutions to problems and lead projects.

Careers Adviser in the School of Physical Sciences

The School of Physical Sciences is looking for someone with a strong interest in people and their futures to work as a Careers Adviser, supporting their contract research staff with career management, development, and training. The successful candidate will be based in the University Careers Service, working mainly in and through Physical Science Departments.

Applicants should have a degree in the physical, mathematical, or natural sciences (including geography), and should have experience of career work or an appropriate professional qualification. Postgraduate experience and qualifications to doctoral level would be useful. Essential personal qualities include enthusiasm, curiosity, objectivity, stamina, and the ability to switch tasks frequently. Above all, the post-holder will need to be outgoing, to like people, and to be able to work under pressure, both independently and in a group. Professional training courses are available.

Appointment will be for a fixed term of two years from 1 March 2007, or as soon as possible thereafter, and will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a six-month probationary period. The salary will be on a scale up to £41,133 depending on experience.

RCUK Academic Fellowship in Human PalaeoGenetics

Applications are invited for an RCUK Academic Fellowship in Human PalaeoGenetics in the Leverhulme Centre for Human Evolutionary Studies. The prime criteria for appointment will be excellence in research in the area of human evolutionary genetics, with particular emphasis on the extraction and analysis of ancient DNA. The University expects to appoint someone who will strengthen and develop the Centre's research programme in human evolutionary genetics and who will actively contribute to the Centre's aims of fostering multi-disciplinary research in human evolution. The person appointed will be expected to take on gradually some teaching, as well as engage in public outreach for the subject. However, the Fellow will be expected to devote most of the first four years of his/her tenure to research. This post is funded for five years by RCUK and the Isaac Newton Trust. Subject to a probationary period and satisfactory performance, the post-holder will be appointed to a permanent academic post at the end of the five-year Fellowship period.

The pensionable stipend is currently in the range of £24,161 to £28,010, depending upon experience. The position is available from 1 April 2007.

Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Departments of Earth Sciences and Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

Applications are sought for a postdoctoral position to work on a project with Professors M. J. Bickle and H. E. Huppert, FRS, within the Institute of Theoretical Geophysics (http://www.itg.cam.ac.uk/), funded by NERC and the Isaac Newton Trust. The project will require the development of new descriptions of carbon dioxide sequestration, from both a theoretical and experimental point of view. The project will also involve analysis of field data.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. Degree in an appropriate discipline with a strong foundation in theoretical modelling and laboratory experimentation. Familiarity with the geological background would be advantageous. The position is available for two years in the first instance. The starting date will be as soon as possible after 1 April 2007. The salary will be on the standard University scale, currently in the range £24,161 to £31,525, depending on previous research experience.
