Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos, 2007

The Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2007, the form of the examinations for certain papers for the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos will be changed as follows:

Part IA

Paper It. A3. Introduction to Italian 3: texts and contexts

The paper will be divided into three sections: Medieval (Section A), Renaissance (Section B), and Modern (Section C). Candidates will be required to answer one question from each section.

Paper It. 1. Italian texts and contexts

The paper will be divided into four sections: Medieval (Section A), Renaissance (Section B), Modern (Section C), and Linguistics (Section D). Candidates will be required to answer three questions, one from each of three sections. At least one answer must be comparative.

Part IB

Paper It. 3. Italian modernism

Candidates will be required to answer question 1 and any two other questions.

Paper It. 4. Autobiography and self-representation in Italian culture

The paper will be divided into two sections. Candidates will be required to answer three questions, at least one of which must be from Section A.

Paper Sp. B3. Translation into the foreign language, and test in the foreign language through audio-visual media.

(b) Listening comprehension test: SPAV. Spanish through audio-visual media In the true/false question in Section A of the paper, candidates will be required to give a brief explanation if they believe the statement given to be false.

Part IB and Part II

Paper Du. 6. The history, varieties, and structure of the Dutch language

This paper, which has been suspended since 2002, will be offered for students at Part IB and Part II. Candidates will be required to answer any three questions.

Papers Fr. 3., Fr. 4., Fr. 5., Fr. 6., Fr. 7., Fr. 8., Fr. 9., and Fr. 10.

The above papers are offered at both Part IB and Part II. There will continue to be no set texts for these papers. There will continue to be three sections, A, B, and C, at Part IB and Part II. Students answer one question from each section. Section A and Section C will be identical at Part IB and Part II. A modified list of questions will be set at Section B on the IB examination paper, in order to guide students towards a specific range of texts and issues.

Paper Fr. 13. The history of the French language

The above paper is offered at both Part IB and Part II. A reduced number of set texts is prescribed for IB students. A modified list of questions will be set at Section C, on the IB examination paper, in order to guide students towards a specific range of texts and issues.

Part II

Paper Sp. 8. Spanish cinema and television

There will be five topics for examination. Candidates will be required to answer three questions relating to three different topics. There are no sections on the paper and no obligation to answer any particular combination of questions, as long as the same material is not used in more than one question. There will be three questions for each topic, in the form 1(a), 1(b), 1(c). Questions will not refer to specific directors or films/television programmes and there will be ample opportunity for students to answer questions with reference to directors or films/television programmes which are not listed in the recommended reading for the paper.
