Senior Technical Officer (Mass Spectrometry Facility Manager) in the Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry in Cambridge houses a world-class mass spectrometry facility with nine state-of-the-art mass spectrometers including an Orbitrap, FT-ICR, Tof-Tof, and several Q-tof mass spectrometers. Owing to internal re-organization, the Department wishes to appoint a facility manager, whose main responsibilities will be to promote the mass spectrometry facility and to undertake collaborative research with members of the academic staff, both within the Department of Chemistry and more widely with other University Departments and industrial collaborators. In this latter regard, we would welcome applications from those with an established research programme, and who might contribute to research papers at international meetings. Additionally, the post-holder will advise on strategic planning for the Department's mass spectrometry service, will be involved in recommendations for purchases of new equipment, will line-manage two technicians, and will have day-to-day financial responsibility for the service.

It is expected that applicants will have a background in synthetic chemistry, chemical biology, or molecular biology to graduate or doctoral level, and will have experience of administering a mass spectrometry service. The pensionable salary will be in the range of £32,471 to £41,133 a year, depending on experience. The post is available from 1 January 2007, and is subject to a probation period of nine months.

Applications, including a full curriculum vitae, a publications list (if applicable), and the names of three professional referees, and accompanied by a completed form PD18 (parts I and III), should be sent to Dr Howard Jones, Department of Chemistry, Lensfield Road, Cambridge, CB2 1EW (e-mail hrnj1@cam.ac.uk), by the closing date of 15 December 2006.
