FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR THE BCL: BARNETT BEQUEST

The College wishes to advertise the Barnett Bequest to assist a UK candidate of outstanding academic excellence who will read for the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) at the University of Oxford from October 2007. The value of the bequest is £4,000 for the year and is intended to assist with the cost of College fees and/or accommodation. This award is tenable only at Merton College. The successful candidate is guaranteed an offer of single graduate accommodation at Merton College for the duration of the BCL, the cost of which will be met by the student. Selection will be made on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.

The competition is open to graduates of any university who are ordinarily resident in the UK and who have been accepted by the Faculty of Law to commence the BCL in October 2007, and who have nominated Merton as first choice College. There is no separate application form required for the Bequest. Eligible candidates will be assessed on the basis of their University application.

Should there be no suitable candidate among applicants who have nominated Merton as first choice, the College reserves the right to award the Bequest to any other candidate sent to it for consideration by the Faculty of Law. It also reserves the right not to award the Barnett Bequest in any given year should no suitable candidate present.

The application form for the BCL can be found on the University's website at http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/. The closing date is 20 January 2007. Any queries regarding the Barnett Bequest should be addressed to the Admissions Officer, Merton College, Oxford, OX1 4JD (e-mail julie.gerhardi@admin.merton.ox.ac.uk).
