Philosophical Society

On 27 November at 8.30 p.m., in the Cockcroft Lecture Theatre, New Museums Site, Professor Ullrich Steiner, of the Department of Physics, will deliver a lecture entitled Instabilities of liquid surfaces: Rayleigh meets nanoscience. All who are interested are invited.

At a meeting held on 13 November in the Cockcroft Lecture Theatre, Professor T. J. Pedley, President, was in the Chair. Dr Andrea Brand, of the Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute, delivered a lecture entitled From stem cells to synapses: how to construct a nervous system. A vote of thanks was moved by Professor A. W. Cuthbert

On 1 December at 9 a.m., a one-day meeting on Sustainable energy will be held in the Pippard Lecture Theatre, Cavendish Laboratory, Madingley Road. This will be an interdisciplinary meeting open to all. The meeting is being organized by Professor David J. C. MacKay and Dr Tim Jervis. The Discussion Session will be chaired by Professor Ian Fells and the speakers are Mr Nick Butler, Mr Karl Carter, Dr Jon R. Gibbins, Professor Daniel Nocera, Dr William Nuttall, and Professor Trevor J. Whittaker.

Prior booking is not required. Lunch tickets are available free to the first 120 Fellows of the Society. Entry is free and all who are interested are invited.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting of the Society was held on 30 October in the Arts School, Bene't Street at 4.30 p.m. Professor T. J. Pedley, President, was in the Chair.

1. The Treasurer presented the audited accounts for the period January to December 2005, which were adopted.

2. The following Officers and Members of Council were elected for the year 2007:

President Elect: Professor A. W. Cuthbert

Treasurer: Dr D. Husain

Vice-Presidents: Professor H. Ahmed, Dr D. B. Norman, Dr A. G. Smith

3. 24 Fellows were elected and five Fellows were re-elected. It was reported that since the last Annual General Meeting nine Fellows had died and 245 had resigned.

4. Messrs Peters Elworthy & Moore were appointed to act as Auditors for the year 2006.
