Examination in Politics for the degree of Master of Philosophy

On the recommendation of the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, the General Board and the Board of Graduate Studies have approved Politics as a subject for further study and training in research for the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course), with effect from 1 October 2008. Special regulations for the examination in the subject have been approved as follows:

Politics

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Politics for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:
(a) a thesis of between 15,000 and 20,000 words in length, excluding footnotes, tables, appendices, and bibliography, on a topic approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences;
(b) one essay of not more than 4,000 words, on a topic in comparative politics prescribed by the Degree Committee;
(c) one essay or other exercise of not more than 3,000 words (or their equivalent), on research methods prescribed by the Degree Committee;
and
(d) one further essay, not exceeding 4,000 words in length, on a topic approved by the Degree Committee, provided that, if the topic chosen falls within one of the fields offered in the examination in International Relations for the degree of Master of Philosophy, candidates may choose to write the essay on that topic under examination conditions as specified under the regulations for that examination.

2. The examination may include, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral examination on the thesis or on the general field of knowledge within which it falls; such an oral examination may include questions relating to the essays submitted by the candidate under Regulation 1.
