Announcement of lectures, seminars, etc.

The following lectures, seminars, etc. will be open to members of the University and others who are interested:

Inaugural Lecture. Professor Graeme Barker, of the Department of Archaeology and the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, will deliver his inaugural lecture, entitled Archaeology and the human revolution: environment, landscape, and culture, to mark his appointment as Disney Professor of Archaeology, on 21 November, at 5 p.m., in Mill Lane Lecture Room 3.

Biotechnology. Professor Austin Smith, Director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Stem Cell Research, will give a seminar entitled Stem cells - what's all the fuss about?, on Thursday, 9 November, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., in the Biochemistry Lecture Theatre (Sanger Building), Tennis Court Road.

Criminology. Professor Stephen Shute, of the University of Birmingham, will give a public seminar, entitled Criminal law in the risk society, on Thursday, 16 November, at 5.30 p.m, in Seminar Room B3, Institute of Criminology (Sidgwick Site).

Divinity. Professor Pierre-Maurice Bogaert, of the Abbaye de Maredsous, will give this year's Jeremie Lecture, entitled The Old Latin as a witness of the Septuagint (Old Greek), at an open meeting of the Old Testament Seminar on Wednesday, 8 November, at 2.30 p.m., in the Runcie Room, Faculty of Divinity, West Road.

Isaac Newton Institute. The Rothschild Visiting Professor, Alain Connes, of Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, will give a seminar at 5 p.m., on Monday, 13 November, entitled Noncommutative geometry and the structure of space-time. McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research. The Eighteenth McDonald Lecture, entitled Celts and Britons: some themes and variations, will be given by Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe, of the University of Oxford, on 29 November, at 5 p.m., in Mill Lane Lecture Room 3.

Philosophy. Professor Thomas Pogge, of Columbia University, will give the Routledge Lecture in Philosophy, entitled Intellectual property rights and access to essential medicines, at 5.15 p.m., on Wednesday, 22 November, in the Lady Mitchell Hall, Sidgwick Avenue.
