University Teaching Associates (Graduate Development Programme)

The University of Cambridge Graduate Development Programme (GDP) has been in operation since 2002 and delivers teaching and transferable skills courses within Departments across the University. Over 2,500 students have participated in these courses, which are informal and aim to be both informative and enjoyable.

The Graduate Development Programme is seeking people with experience of teaching, research, and/or working in graduate development who are available to run these courses as part of a team led by Academic Staff Development. Candidates should have fluent English, be self confident, and have a high standard of presentation and facilitation skills. Although working on a sessional basis, Teaching Associates (UTAs) are expected to show an ongoing commitment to their work with graduate students and regular communication with the GDP co-ordinators. Applications from people who can use their teaching experience to deliver courses in supervising, lecturing, and teaching skills would be particularly welcome.

Every UTA is given an introduction to the programme and ongoing support and development opportunities that take account of their experience and skills. Most courses take place in term and trainers are paid on a sessional basis. Prospective trainers should be prepared to offer to do at least six days' training in an academical year, and should expect to be in the Cambridge area for at least the academical year 2006-07. The gross rate of pay is £220 for whole-day and £160 for half-day training courses, after an initial training period.

Applications, including a curriculum vitae, a letter of application, and the names of two referees who can comment on the applicant's teaching experience, should be sent to the Graduate Development Programme, 25 Trumpington Street, Cambridge, CB2 1QA (e-mail graduate.development@admin.cam.ac.uk) by 24 November 2006. Further information on the GDP may be found at http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/personnel/staffdev/graduates/. Informal enquires may be made to Dr Annette Mahon (tel. 01223 765304).
