Graces submitted to the Regent House on 1 November 2006

The Council submit the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, other than any which is withdrawn or for which a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 107), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 10 November 2006.

1. That, on the recommendation of the Board of Graduate Studies, payments to Examiners for the degree of Eng.D. (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 427) be replaced by the sums specified in the Schedule below, and that the regulations for the degree be amended accordingly.1

2. That the Professorship of Politics, established in the University from 1 October 2007 by Grace 4 of 15 February 2006, be established from 1 January 2007.2

3. That Regulation 4 for the Hamilton Prize be amended as follows:

By replacing in sub-paragraph (a) the words 'not more than nine terms' by the words 'not more than twelve terms'.3

4. That the regulations for certain prizes awarded to candidates for the Final M.B. Examination be amended as set out below.4

A. The George Peter Baker Prize in Medicine (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 715)

By replacing in Regulation 1 the reference to Part III of the Final M.B. Examination by reference to Part II of that examination; and by amending Regulation 3 so as to read:

3. A Prize shall be awarded each year to the candidate who achieves the highest combined score in the multiple choice, extended matching, and structured-answer components of Part II of the Final M.B. Examination held in that academical year.

B. Gresham Prize in Pathology (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 770)

By amending Regulation 3 so as to read:

3. The Prize shall be awarded each year to the candidate who achieves the highest score in the Final M.B. Part I Examinations in Pathology held in that academical year.

C. Lewin Prize Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 798)

By replacing in Regulation 1 the reference to Part III of the Final M.B. Examination by reference to Part II of that examination; in Regulation 2, by amending the title of the Prize so as to read 'Lewin Prize in Medicine'; and by amending Regulation 3 so as to read:

3. The Prize shall be awarded each year to the candidate who achieves the second highest combined score in the multiple choice, extended matching, and structured-answer components of Part II of the Final M.B. Examination held in that academical year.

D. The Roger Morris Prizes in Medicine and Surgery (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 817)

By replacing in Regulation 1 the reference to Part III of the Final M.B. Examination by reference to Part II of that examination; and by amending Regulations 2 and 3 so as to read:

2. The title of each Prize shall be the Roger Morris Prize in Clinical Medicine and Surgery.

3. The Prizes shall be awarded each year to the candidates who are judged by the Regius Professor of Physic to have shown the greatest distinction in the clinical aspects of the Final M.B. Part II Examinations held in that academical year.

5. That a Benson English Library Fund be established in the University to be governed by the following regulation:5

Benson English Library Fund

The income of the Fund derived from monies accruing to the Faculty of English from the unexpended balance of a legacy of Dr A. C. Benson, of Magdalene College, in 1925, and an appeal for the English Library made following the First World War, and now known as the Benson English Library Fund, shall, at the discretion of the Faculty Board of English, be expended to maintain a Library for the Faculty of English.

2 Statutes and Ordinances, p. 698. The successful candidate for this Professorship is able to take up appointment on 1 January 2007 and the General Board agree that this would be advantageous for the development of the Faculty's research strategy.

3 Statutes and Ordinances, p. 773. The Faculty Boards of Engineering and of Physics and Chemistry have recommended that eligibility to compete for the Prize should be extended to Graduate Students in their fourth year of their course of research.

4 The regulations have been amended to take account of recent changes to the Final M.B. Examination.

5 This Fund has hitherto been administered informally. It is now proposed to establish it on a formal basis.
