Research Assessment Exercise 2008: Notice

Code of Practice for the University of Cambridge

In June 2005, the four UK funding bodies published their guide to higher education institutions on policy and practical matter in preparation of submissions to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). This document, Guidance on Submissions, is available at http://www.rae.ac.uk/pubs/2005/03/. One of the principles underpinning the 2008 RAE is equality and details of how the funding bodies intend to comply with equal opportunities legislation are set out in paragraphs 14, 35-38, and Appendix G of Guidance on Submissions. Included is the requirement that, when making an RAE submission, the head of each higher education institution will confirm that the HEI has 'developed, adopted and documented' an appropriate internal code of practice which attends to all relevant equal opportunities legislation in force on the submission date.

Discussions have taken place across the University concerning the appropriate arrangements for Cambridge. This notice confirms that the General Board have approved a code of practice for Cambridge which is available at http://www.rae.cam.ac.uk/. Equality training sessions are also being run jointly by the Personnel Division's Equality and Diversity section and the officers co-ordinating the University's RAE submission. Anyone who has not attended a session but wishes to do so, or requires a hard copy of the code, should contact Dr Claire Smith (tel. 01223 761507, e-mail cjs90@admin.cam.ac.uk).
