Christ's College

GEORGE KINGSLEY ROTH RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP COMPETITION 2006-07

The Governing Body of Christ's College invites applications for the George Kingsley Roth Research Fellowship, tenable for a period of four years from 1 October 2007. The Fellowship is open to candidates intending to work on topics relating to the anthropology, ethnology, or history of the South Asian, East Asian, or Pacific Basin areas, or on contemporary issues (e.g. economics, sociology, or politics) relating to these areas. Tenure may be split by a period, or periods, of intermission (unpaid) not exceeding two years in duration, to enable the holder to pursue research away from Cambridge.

Applicants should hold a first degree, or higher degree, qualification from a university in the British Isles, or should be studying at such a University for a higher degree. They should be well advanced with their postgraduate studies, and should not hold a Fellowship at another Cambridge College. It is intended to give the successful applicant the opportunity to participate in collegiate life, to the mutual benefit of the individual and the College, with the aim of enhancing the individual's prospects of appointment to an established academic position.

The initial stipend for a George Kingsley Roth Research Fellow is currently £12,691 (without a Ph.D.) or £15,560 (with a Ph.D.), rising by three annual increments to £14,487 or £17,723 respectively. Fellows living out of College receive a supplement of £1,748 (without a Ph.D.) or £3,748 (with a Ph.D.). Stipends are reviewed annually. Financial support from other sources will be taken into account. Research Fellows are entitled to the use of a room in College free of charge and seven free meals a week. Research expenses may also be paid.

Application forms are available on the College website at http://www.christs.cam.ac.uk/info/fellowship/, and may also be requested in writing from the Master's Assistant, Christ's College, Cambridge, CB2 3BU. Completed application forms and curricula vitae should be sent to the Master's Assistant so as to reach her not later than 29 September 2006. Candidates should also arrange for two people familiar with their work to send references to the Master's Assistant so as to reach her by the same date. The appropriate forms for the use of referees will be included with the application forms. Late applications cannot be accepted.

Short-listed candidates will be invited to submit by 4 November 2006 four copies of any published or unpublished work with which they wish to support their application: this work need not be a formal dissertation, but it should illustrate the nature and quality of their research work. The successful candidate(s) will be notified by 26 January 2007.
