Notice of benefactions

17 July 2006

The Vice-Chancellor gives notice that she has received the following benefactions:

(i) a most generous benefaction of £8m over four years from Trinity College in support of the University's 800th Campaign. The benefaction will be used to support Professorships in the Schools of Arts and Humanities and the Humanities and Social Sciences;
(ii) a benefaction of US$4m from the Board of Cambridge in America. The benefaction is made possible following a most generous gift to Cambridge in America by Dr David and Mrs Susan Hibbitt and is to be used to endow a new full-time academic post in Solid Mechanics in the Department of Engineering;
(iii) a bequest of approximately £4,000 received under the Will of Dr Graham Storey, Emeritus Reader in English Literature and Fellow of Trinity Hall, to establish a fund for the Faculty of English to pay for an annual lecture on an English novelist. The bequest has been generously augmented by a gift of £46,000 in his memory from the Governing Body of Trinity Hall.

Regulations to govern the new Professorship funds will be set before the Regent House for approval in due course. The Council are submitting Graces to the Regent House (Graces 1 and 2, p. 852) for the approval of regulations to govern the two other benefactions.
